Foods That Help Digestion

Apples are easily digested and contain solvents, stabilizers, muscle builders, brain and body builders, oxygen carriers, and bone builders in the form of various minerals. Amazing that there are all those benefits in one piece of fruit. Read on and see why apples for good health is true.

The fruit sugar from the apple is readily available and quickly passes into the bloodstream. The malic and tartaric acid in the apple neutralize any overacidity in the body. That is why apples are often used in monofasts to detoxify the body, overcome digestive problems, and help with gout.

Apples contain phenols, which have a double effect on cholesterol. Phenols reduces bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. They prevent LDL cholesterol from forming into oxidized LDL, which is a very dangerous kind of bad cholesterol.

Eat sweet apples if you have too much acid in your system. Eat sour apples if you have too little acid, and/or are constipated. Apples are also a great tooth cleanser.

Apples for good health can also be apples for first aid. You can use them raw, peeled or grated as a poultice, or roast the apple in an oven and extract the pulp. Use this pulp on eyes to relieve any kind of strain or inflammation. Raw, over ripe or roasted apple pulp can be used as a poultice one type of sprain.

Apple water is a good cooling drink for fever. Vinegar made from apples has many medicinal and health uses. Apple cider vinegar is an excellent cosmetic aid and can be mixed with rosewater for a daily restorative face splash. You can find rosewater in the ethnic food section (middle eastern) of your grocery store or at health food stores. Use a cup of apple cider vinegar in a bath to soften the skin and to help reduce fatigue.

A study at the University of Nottingham Research shows that people who eat 5 apples or more per week have less respiratory problems, including asthma. So eat apples for good health every day and you know the rest of the saying.

Fresh Grated Nutmeg and Digestive Disorders

There are many remedies for digestive disorders sitting in your pantry. Now probably most of you have powdered nutmeg you use for baking but in this case we want whole nutmeg which you can also find at your grocery store. You would be surprised at the benefits of nutmeg in terms of digestive problems.

Grated nutmeg (Myristica fragens) is an invaluable aid in digestive discomfort, including diarrhea, nervous dyspepsia, vomiting, intestinal spasm and inflammatory diseases affecting the gut. It may also be used for gas or flatulence. Its actions as an antispasmodic and digestive tonic are due to its high concentration of volatile oils, including pinene and eugenol (also found in cloves.)

Add a tiny amount of grated fresh nutmeg to a cup of ginger tea. A diluted version of this recipe (2:1, boiled water to spiced tea) is also useful as a natural remedy for dealing with colic.

Additionally you can use nutmeg as an ingredient in making your own mouthwash. To create a spicy mouthwash soak 1 teaspoon each of nutmeg, peppercorns and rosemary in 150 ml (or about 5 ounces) of apple cider vinegar or red wine for 2 weeks. Strain before using. Chopped ginger root may also be included: if so, used warm, this will also soothe swollen tonsils or a sore throat.

There are so many other items in your pantry that may helpful if you have a stomach ache, diarrhea, constipation or gas. See our post Cure Digestive Problems Getting rid of that bloated feeling may be easier and less expensive than you might expect.

How do Probiotics Work

Here is an interesting bit of information about foods that have probiotic bacteria from Dr. Oz. The latest research has indicated that the bacteria in your digestive system may play a role in how slim or pudgy you are. The good bacteria that live in your intestines called probiotics break down food, help you absorb certain nutrients, keep your immune system strong and keep away bad bacteria that causes diarrhea, ulcers and urinary tract infections. Probiotics can also help ease irritable bowel syndrome.

Apparently now there is evidence that bad bacteria can make you fat. In one study, obese people were three times more likely than lean people to have a virus called Ad-26 in their digestive tracts – a bug known to make chickens fatter. Also, some intestinal bacteria seem to trigger bigger appetites and a tendency to store more calories as fat.

Dr. Oz suggests that your best bet to prevent this bacteria from getting into your system or get it out of your system is to feed your body special prebiotic fibers called inulin and oligosaccharides. Get these from bananas, asparagus, onions and garlic; also, dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichokes and jicama. Apples may help too, as will barley, berries, tomatoes, honey, flaxseed and beans.

In addition both he and Dr. Mike recommend taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis even if your healthy. Dr. Mike says though you can get probiotics in food easily, but a supplement is more reliable.

Bowtrol Probiotic contains 9 Billion live probiotic cells, more than 5 times the live active cultures typically found in yogurt, but without the sugar and calories. Unlike many other probiotics, the Bowtrol Probiotic is specially designed to survive the acidic stomach environment and be delivered to the intestines. Click on the banner below to find out how you can start feeling better today.

Home Remedies for Stomach Ulcer

About 25 million people in the U.S. are expected to develop peptic ulcers at some point in their lives. Peptic ulcer disease affects all age groups, but is uncommon in children. Men have twice the risk of ulcers as women. The risk of duodenal ulcers tends to rise, beginning around age 25, and continues until age 75. The risk of gastric ulcers peaks at ages 55 – 65.

There are many over the counter products and prescription drugs used to treat ulcers but there is a great deal of dissatisfaction with their performance. I have taken both over-the-counter and prescription treatment for stomach ulcers and not gotten relief. I have had a great deal more success with home remedies for stomach ulcers.

Cabbage juice is often mentioned as one of the most popular home remedies for ulcers. I know it sounds awful and you would probably have to have a juicer to make it or boil cabbage for an extended period of time. Neither sounds too appealing to me. There is an alternative though – L-Glutamine. L-Glutamine is the amino acid in cabbage which helps strengthen the cells lining the esophagus and stomach so they can repair themselves. L-glutamine works just as well as cabbage juice and comes in capsule form.

Aloe vera juice is also helpful in healing and preventing ulcers. When I consulted a doctor who was both an medical doctor and a doctor of natural medicine. Aloe vera juice was one the things she recommended I take. If I start to feel even the slightest stomach ulcer symptom, I immediately begin taking Aloe vera juice. You can buy it in the health food section of your grocery store. Some of the medicinal properties of aloe vera juice are: anti bacterial, antifungal, anti viral and also an anti inflammatory agent.

Cayenne pepper sounds like one of the most unlikely candidates for healing stomach ulcers but many people including myself have used it too successfully relieve pain from ulcers. One theory is that cayenne pepper may kill h-pylori bacteria that is frequently the cause of peptic ulcers. Capsaicin which is the ingredient in cayenne peppers that makes them hot. Capsaicin is thought to be able to rebuild stomach tissue and may bring blood there more quickly.. Cayenne pepper also an anesthetic and therefore may prevent you from feeling the pain and can help control ulcer-related bleeding, as well.

Licorice, chamomile, cinnamon, marshmallow, slippery elm, calendula and agrimony are commonly used by herbalists use to reduce acid in the lower stomach. I found chamomile to be helpful at times in reducing the pain from ulcers and many studies conducted in Germany show that chamomile is effective in reducing symptoms of digestive disorders.

Many herbs that are come under the category of soothing your nerves may also be helpful in healing stomach ulcers. Though stress does not cause ulcers it certainly can aggravate them. Studies of the herb kava have shown it to be a safe nonaddictive anti-anxiety medicine. It contains benzodiazepines which is also in valium a common prescription drug for anxiety. Other herbs which are also recommended for stress reduction are St. John’s Wort, Skullcap, Lemon verbena and Passion Flower.

If you suffer from digestive pain your digestive pain can also be reduced by eating certain foods together.

Vitamin B Deficiency and Hair Loss

You look amazingly young for your age but your hair is still getting thinner on your head and thicker in other places you don’t want it to. You have tried hair products guaranteed to bring results but have had no luck. Dr Oz says take a look at your diet and your hair. Here is a list of the tops foods for better hair according to Dr. Mehmet Oz who you have probably seen on Oprah or on his own show on cable – The Dr. Oz show.

Salmon – Omega-3-rich foods such as salmon and sardines help seal in your hair’s shine. Distilled fish oils or DHA supplement will work too. Oz recommends 2g of fish oil if you’re taking a supplement that contains both EPA and DHA. If you’re taking DHA alone, you need only 600 mg.

Bran - Bran is rich in Vitamin B, which may slow hair loss and promote hair growth. Other B-rich foods include beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, soybeans, nuts and eggs. Increase the fiber in your diet and your hair may grow faster.

Avocados – The whole fruit as well as avocado oil may prevent some of the things that kill hair follicles – dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – from getting where it wants to go.

Animal Fat - Cut our animal as well as palm and coconut oils (these oils raise your cholesterol) which lead to more DHT production and hair-follicle damage.

Green Tea – Brew a strong pot (leave tea steeping for 5 to 7 minutes), cool, then pour over your hair. This will help kill off dandruff causing fungus. Oz also says if you drink green tea with caffeine in it the tea may help prevent balding. Green tea works either on your hair directly or in your diet and your hair.

Some of the foods that help produce healthy hair also help prevent cancer such as carrots and beans. So by eating these foods you are getting a double benefit. Want to find out Dr. Oz’s other choices for foods that help to prevent cancer? See our post =>

Home Remedies for Stomach Gas

Despite all the different symptoms, many digestive problems may come from body imbalance, fast eating, bad nutrition, or high stress levels. Here is a listing of herbs that can relieve and cure digestive problems that are temporary.

These herbs if used in tandem with improvements in diets and stress management may also relieve some chronic conditions. So here are some home remedies for stomach gas and other digestive problems. You may not even need to go out to get these home remedies for stomach gas, they may be right in your pantry.

Anise - Drink anise seed tea or add drops of anisette liqueur to alleviate gas. You can find this tea in your grocery store or health food store.

Caraway - Bruise caraway seeds (1 tsp. of seeds to 1 cup boiling water) and 1 cup boiling water and steep for 15 to 30 minutes. Strain and drink.

Cayenne – Add a few grains (up 1/8 tsp.) to chamomile, peppermint, or other suggested digestive teas to relieve feeling of discomfort.

Chamomile - Chamomile is used to control intestinal spasms. Can also be used as an enema or an abdominal poultice.

Cinnamon - The aroma and the volatile oil of this bark are helpful with indigestion and flatulence control. Add it to other herbal teas.

Cloves - Make a tea with 1 tablespoon to a pint of boiling water, or add bruised cloves to other herbal teas.

Coriander – Use this seed in cooking and you will prevent gas from forming. Many South American dishes call for this spice.

Cumin – Combine it with other herbs in digestive teas.

Dill - Bruise a teaspoon of the seeds and add that to half a cup of boiled water. Steep and strain. This is a safe remedy for infants.

Fennel – This is another outstanding herb to ease stomach-aches. Soak bruised fennel seeds in cold water or in hot to cure digestive problems.

Ginger - In India, Europeans who suffer from indigestion are given ginger tea instead of regular tea. Ginger tea is stimulative and carminative, and is also useful in dealing with infant colic and flatulence.

Probiotics are the good bacteria that help your digestive system. Though you can find probiotics in many foods both Dr. Oz and Dr. Mike recommend taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis to keep your digestion system healthy.

Click on the banner below to find out how you can improve your digestive system and start feeling better today.

If you suspect you have an ulcer check out my postHome Remedies for Ulcer. I personally tried this one and had got relief within a few days.

Diet to Prevent Colon Cancer

Dr. Oz says one in 19 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer at some point, and many aren’t taking any preventive measures. There are many foods to prevent colon cancer which you can include in your diet. Dr. Oz also mentions vitamin B6, baby aspirin and coffee as part of your diet to prevent colon cancer. Read on to find out why you should include the following foods in your diet.

Fish - In a large, 22 year study, men who ate fish five times a week had a 40% lower risk of colorectal cancer than men who didn’t. Salmon is your best bet because it has a high concentration of vitamin D which has been shown to be effective in preventing colon cancer.

Whole grains – More highly processed products made with refined flour can create a sluggish insulin response and make the environment in your colon more friendly to tumors.

Beans - and celery, radishes, cucumbers, peppers and onions, are high in flavonols, compounds that help prevent colon polyps. Studies show that diets high in flavonols were 76% less likely to be associated with recurring advanced-stage polyps.

Coffee – I was surprised to find coffee on the list of foods to prevent colon cancer but it seems coffee is a good source of chlorogenic acid., Chlorogenic acid is a compound believed to slow glucose absorption during digestion and it has been shown to help prevent colon cancer.

Sources of Vitamin B6 – Spinach, bananas, ready to eat cereal which 100% fortified, potatoes and chicken breasts are all good sources of vitamin B6 (National Institute of Health) If you get about 4 mg of B6 a day you can reduce your risk of colon cancer by up to 30%.

The last thing Dr. Oz recommends to add to your diet to prevent colon cancer is two baby aspirin per day. Apparently it can cut your risk as much as 40%. But ask your doctor first to make sure it won’t interfere with other medication.

Probiotics are the good bacteria that help your digestive system. Though you can find probiotics in many foods both Dr. Oz and Dr. Mike recommend taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis to keep your digestion system healthy. Dr. Mike says though you can get probiotics in food easily, but a supplement is more reliable.

Did you know that bone mass decline begins as early as age 40? It’s a scary fact to know but it is one those things in life where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You can so easily prevent osteoporosis by doing exercises for bone health and changing your diet a bit.

Calcium and vitamin D are what help prevent osteoporosis and debilitating fractures. Fragile bones tend to break more easily. Calcium which is found in dairy products and other products may be fortified with calcium such as cereal, increase bone density. Vitamin D which our body makes by itself when we expose our skin to sunlight, helps us absorb the calcium we put in our system.

Most women do not get enough calcium or vitamin D so you might want to ask your doctor about supplements. The recommended daily dose is 1,000 to 1,400 mg of calcium and 800 to 1,000 IU of Vitamin D. Now, onto exercises for bone health.

When you do weight bearing exercises, your bones have to work and so they get stronger just like your muscles do when they work. You can do weight lifting exercises with light weights ( 1 lb, 3 lb., 5lb, or 8 lb. )or you can do exercises that use your body weight as the “weight.”

If you have a chair, a curb, the bottom step of staircase or a sturdy foot stool you can do the easy “weight bearing” exercises.

Sit to Stand – Sit upright in a chair (your best posture – back straight), keeping your feet shoulder width apart. Push your heels into the ground and stand up slowly, back straight, without using your arms. Stand for one second, then gradually lower your body back to the sitting position (don’t use hands). Repeat this exercise 10 times. The slower you stand up the harder your body has to work. So you can increase your level of intensity by how slow you stand and sit back down.

Step up – Standing, place your right foot one a curb, bottom step of a staircase or a sturdy foot stool. Then lift your left foot onto the stop too. Step back down, leading with your left foot. Repeat 10 times, then do 10 repetitions starting with your left foot.

These are 2 easy exercises for bone health and will probably help your posture too since you must keep your back straight.

Though lean proteins and whole grains are wonderful for other parts of your body they are usually highly acidic and excess acid breaks down bone. To keep your bones strong add fruits and vegetables to your diet because they are alkaline (opposite of acids) and will balance the acid of grains and proteins.

Most women don’t get enough Vitamin D and it turns out it is not always easy to get as much Vitamin D as you need. If you want to find out the best way to get vitamin D =>>>>

Diabetic Foot Care Guide

If you have diabetes, you need to pay close attention to your feet. Foot care in diabetes mellitus patients is very important. Diabetes can cause both nerve damage and hardening of the blood vessels in your feet. Lack of feeling in your feet makes it hard for you to tell if you have a sore or blister. If the sore gets infected, the infection can spread quickly to the rest of your body. Diabetic foot problems cause more hospital stays that any other complications of diabetes.

Here is a brief diabetic foot care guide so you can avoid serious complications from minor foot problems:

1. Watch for sign of foot problems daily.

2. Wash your feet every day and pat your feet dry.

3. Keep skin smooth and soft by rubbing lotion, cream or petroleum jelly on the tops and bottoms of your feet (but not between the toes).

4. Trim your toenails regularly. If you have trouble doing this get a professional to do it for you. You will need to see a podiatrist which is a medical doctor that specializes in foot care.

5. Do not go barefoot

6. The toenails should be cut straight across regularly. Excessively long nails are subject to trauma.

7. Avoid leaving “spikes” of nail at the sides of the nail under the skin.

8. Wearing comfortable socks and shoes is an easy way to have good foot care in diabetes mellitus.

9. Do not treat calluses, corns, or bunions before checking with your doctor.

10. Protect your feet from extreme temperatures.

11. Keep blood flowing to feet.

12. Have a foot check-up at least once a year.

By taking the time to perform good foot care in diabetes mellitus you can avoid expensive and life threatening medical problems.

Wonder if your at risk for diabetes? See our post <a href=”http://www.curepure.com/alternative-medicine/diabetes/are-you-at-risk-for-diabetes/”>Who is at risk for type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. There is a great recipe included in the post. I tested it and I can assure it tastes fabulous, even my teenage daughter enjoyed it.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something every day to prevent cancer in your body? Well, there is an easy way to do just that by consuming one cancer fighting food each day. According to research, these 10 foods can help protect against a variety of cancers says author Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, who wrote 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Here are the ten foods that help to prevent cancer:

Canned Beans - The have lots of fiber, which helps protect against colon and stomach cancer. Research also show they may help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence in post menopausal women.

Broccoli – It is high in a phytochemical called sulforaphane, which helps fight carcinogens, and is rich in the anitoxidant indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Carrots - Carrots are high in antioxidants that have been associated with a lower risk of bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, larynx and esophageal cancer, as well as postmenopausal breast cancer. Cooked carrots provide better absorption better than raw.

Coffee – Some studies indicate that one cup a day may help protect against liver cancer.

Red or purple grapes – Grapes ae high in resveratrol, an antioxidant that’s been shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells (specifically breast, stomach, colon and leukemia).

Lemons – They contain a group of chemicals called limonoids, which have been shown to protect against breast, lung, skin and colon cancer.

Mushrooms - Certain mushrooms such as shitake, are loaded with beta-glucans, which stimulate your body’s production of cancer-fighting natural killer cells.

Cranberries – They’re high in an antioxidant that’s been found in studies to fight leukemia, breast, lung and colon cancer cells. You can get them dried or in juice form. Add them to your salad or mix cranberry juice with orange juice for a tangy treat.

Yogurt – It is a rich source of probiotics, the “good” bacteria in your gut, that help keep “bad” bacteria away, especially H. pylori, which is linked to esophageal and stomach cancer. The H. pylori bacteria also causes ulcers. Try greek yogurt if you don’t like the taste of yogurt. Greek yogurt is thicker and sweeter than regular yogurt and comes in lots of great flavors.

Garlic and Onions - According to the National Institutes of Health, studies of people from Southern Europe who eat a diet high in garlic and onions show a direct relationship between high consumption of “allium” vegetables (all types of garlic, onions, and leeks) and reduced risk of many common cancers.
