Probiotics Reviews

I had never heard of probiotic food before I saw this article in the health section of our local paper. I am familiar with digestive enzymes which are a form of digestive health supplements and have taken them with great success when I had a digestive problem that I couldn’t seem to rid of. Probiotics apparently can assist you with restoring digestive health.

There is a book out called The Probiotics Revolution by Gary Huffnagle. Huffnagle is professor of internal medicine, microbiology and immunology at University of Michigan Medical Center. Huffnagle defines probiotics as “friendly microbes that normally live in our digestive tracts and that are naturally found in fermented foods such as yogurt, aged cheese and certain pickles.”

There are three types of probiotics - one that stays in your system for a day or two after ingestion, one that stays for a few weeks and one that stays permanently.  “Most of the products that are on the market are in the second category” says Huffnagle. According to Huffnagle  we need to encourage these good  bacteria in our system and we can do that by consuming foods that are high in probiotics such as:

  1. Yogurt with live bacteria
  2. Frozen yogurt with live bacteria
  3. Probiotic “shots”
  4. Aged cheese
  5. Kefir
  6. Cultured dairy products such as buttermilk, sour cream and enriched cottage cheese
  7. Fermented foods such as pickles, sauerkraut, kimchee and miso

The article also talks about prebiotics which are nutrients in the diet that can help probiotics grow and function in the body. Huffnagle says “any food source that is high in soluable fiber will be a good prebiotic.” Here is a list of foods from the article that were high in prebiotics:

  1. Berries and their juices: blueberries, raspberries, cranberries, strawberries and cherries
  2. Nuts, seeds, and dried fruit
  3. Spices, especially oregano
  4. Whole grain sourdough bread
  5. Oats
  6. Legumes: beans, lentil and peas
  7. Brewed tea: green and black teas are best
  8. Red wine: a glass or two a day
  9. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder
