Here are more of Dr. Sears prevention tips for moms to be and for parents with young children:

Dr Sears Prevention Tips

Moms to be:

Avoid vitamin D deficiency before, during and after pregnancy (if breast feeding)

Avoid mercury. Moms-to.be should have metal fillings replaced at least three months prior to getting pregnant. Request mercury-free flu shots

Limit antibiotics.

Use ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) instead of acetaminophen (Tylenol).

For Infants Who Have Autistic Older Siblings:

Ask for a vaccine schedule which gives no more than two shots at a time.

Go GFCF from the start, including mom while she is pregnant and breast feeding.

Delay vaccines schedule until your child is three years old; regressive autism is almost unheard of.

GFCF Diet Tips

Go casein free first, because it usually involves only a few changes to the diet.

Don’t go cold turkey. Instead take a couple of weeks at a time to ease into changes of your child’s diet.

Determine how strict you need to be. Some kids can tolerate the occasional infraction.

Don’t go it alone. Find someone who can mentor you along.

Thyme tea has many other benefits besides being one of the foods that helps with digestion. Thymol, one of the volatile oils in thyme, is a potent antioxidant. According to The World’s Healthiest Foods, thymol may help to increase omega-3 fatty acids, or healthy fats, in brain cells. In a clinical study conducted by K.A. Youdim and colleagues and published in the April 19, 1999 issue of “Biochemical and Biophysical Research,” researchers found that thyme oil helped to protect against age-related changes in the brain cells of rats. Studies are ongoing to determine whether thyme can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to thymol, thyme tea contains the antioxidant flavonoids apigenin, naringenin, luteolin, and thymonin.

Here is an interesting fact about thyme: It is more effective when used with other herbs. So if you want to make your thyme tea into a super natural digestive aids add peppermint or mint leaves to your tea or you can add a bit of cayenne pepper. If you can find peppermint tea just put a bag in with your thyme tea. Most people don’t think of cayenne pepper as a digestive aid but it actually works quite well.

List Cancer Fighting Foods Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something every day to prevent cancer in your body? Well, there is an easy way to do just that by consuming one cancer fighting food each day. According to research, these 10 foods can help protect against a variety of cancers says author Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, who wrote 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Here are the ten foods that help to prevent cancer: Canned Beans - The have lots of fiber, which helps protect against colon and stomach cancer. Research also show they may help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence in post menopausal women. Broccoli – It is high in a phytochemical called sulforaphane, which helps fight carcinogens, and is rich in the anitoxidant indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something every day to prevent cancer in your body? Well, there is an easy way to do just that by consuming one cancer fighting food each day. According to research, these 10 foods can help protect against a variety of cancers says author Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, who wrote 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Here are the ten foods that help to prevent cancer:

Canned Beans - The have lots of fiber, which helps protect against colon and stomach cancer.

Carrots - Carrots are high in antioxidants that have been associated with a lower risk of bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, larynx and esophageal cancer, as well as postmenopausal breast cancer. Cooked carrots provide better absorption better than raw.

Coffee – Some studies indicate that one cup a day may help protect against liver cancer.

Red or purple grapes – Grapes ae high in resveratrol, an antioxidant that’s been shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells (specifically breast, stomach, colon and leukemia).

Lemons – They contain a group of chemicals called limonoids, which have been shown to protect against breast, lung, skin and colon cancer.

Mushrooms - Certain mushrooms such as shitake, are loaded with beta-glucans, which stimulate your body’s production of cancer-fighting natural killer cells.

Cranberries – They’re high in an antioxidant that’s been found in studies to fight leukemia, breast, lung and colon cancer cells. You can get them dried or in juice form. Add them to your salad or mix cranberry juice with orange juice for a tangy treat.

Yogurt – It is a rich source of probiotics, the “good” bacteria in your gut, that help keep “bad” bacteria away, especially H. pylori, which is linked to esophageal and stomach cancer. The H. pylori bacteria also causes ulcers. Try greek yogurt if you don’t like the taste of yogurt. Greek yogurt is thicker and sweeter than regular yogurt and comes in lots of great flavors.

Garlic and Onions - According to the National Institutes of Health, studies of people from Southern Europe who eat a diet high in garlic and onions show a direct relationship between high consumption of “allium” vegetables (all types of garlic, onions, and leeks) and reduced risk of many common cancers.

Weight Loss and Coffee

Eggs

The only person who used to talk about how great eggs were for weight loss was Dr. Atkins but now nutritionists have changed their tune. The American Dietetic Association says that healthy folks can have them every day without raising their cholesterol levels- and researchers in Canada believe that eating eggs might help reduce high blood pressure. Eggs have proteins called peptides which seem to work like blood-pressure drugs. Plus by eating eggs, you’ll boost your odds of losing weight. Eggs are have a lot of protein, which takes time to digest. Protein in the morning keeps your stomach full, so you eat less during the rest of the day.

Other so called “bad” foods that can help you lose weight are:

Steak

Again, Dr. Atkins used to be only one advocating eating red meat but now steak has been discovered to be good for weight loss. A lean cut of beef has barely more saturated fat than a similar size skinless chicken breast. Steak is high in protein and can keep you feeling full longer. To get plenty of protein with less fat, choose T-bone, sirloin tip, or other extra-lean cuts — and limit portions to the size of your fist.

Pork

Today’s cuts of pork tenderloin are 31% leaner than 20 years ago. That makes this white meat a lean source of protein with benefits similar to those of lean beef.

Pasta

Whole grain pasta can actually help you lose weight. Research suggests people who eat several servings of whole-grain foods per day are more likely to lose weight and maintain healthy weights. According to one study, eating whole grains rather than refined grains can also help burn belly fat. Taste is always the big issue with whole grain pasta – so try a couple of different brands and see which tastes best to you.

Nuts

Nuts may be high in fat, but it’s the kind of fat that is good for you. Nuts are also high in protein and fiber, which can help stabilize blood sugar. Studies show small amounts of peanut butter can control hunger without causing weight gain. I like peanut butter on celery.

Cheese

Cheese was always a food to be avoided by dieters but the theory is now that the body burns more fat when it gets enough calcium, so eating cheese, yogurt, and milk may actually help you lose weight. Yogurt also has those great probiotics which help your body fight bad bacteria. Calcium supplements don’t seem to have the same effect so don’t substitute them for dairy products.

Coffee

If you drink it black, you get a metabolism boost without added fat and calories. If black coffee is hard to tolerate you might try reducing the amount of cream and sugar you use gradually. Also I find adding cinnamon helps it taste better. One study indicates the caffeine in two cups of coffee may cause a 145-pound woman to burn 50 extra calories over four hours.

All food is good is small portions. Dietitians saysnot to deprive of foods you love but eat them in small portions. One piece of really good chocolate or an ounce of a full fat cheese is better than a pint of low-fat ice cream or several slices of low fat cheese. I can say from personal experience you will feel much more satisfied.

Probiotic Food

Dr. Oz has some very good information about healthy bacteria and what it can and can’t do for your body:

Healthy Digestive Tract – Your GI tract is one great big immune system says Dr. Oz. The GI tract has both good and bad bacteria in it. You have to help make sure the good bacteria wins the war and you can do this by consuming such bacteria as L. casei, L bulgaricus and L. acidophilus. All these bacteria help bolster your immune system.

Decrease lactose intolerance -Consuming yogurt with live cultures, such L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus helps break down lactose which is the sugar in milk that causes some people to have gas and stomach pain.

Help digestion – Some yogurt contains Bifidus regularis or Bacillus coagulans, which reduce the time it takes for food to pass through your system.

Prevent ulcers - Probiotics in yogurt with live cultures eaten just once a week may keep H. pylori, the bacteria behind ulcers, from sticking to your intestinal walls.

Prevent UTI – Women with chronic urinary tract infections often have lower than normal levels of lactobacillus. Low levels of lactobacillus can weaken your ability to fight off bacteria.

Ease side effects from antibiotics – Antibiotis can erase good and bad bacteria from your digestive system which can cause painful gas. Studies show that probiotics taken with or after antibiotics can help with the side effects.

Relief from IBS symptoms – If you have irritable bowel syndrome, you either have diarrhea or constipation. Live bacteria such bifidobacterium, spore-formers or magnesium may help.

Probiotics are the good bacteria that help your digestive system. Though you can find probiotics in many foods both Dr. Oz and Dr. Mike recommend taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis to keep your digestion system healthy. Dr. Mike says though you can get probiotics in food easily, but a supplement is more reliable.

Bowtrol Probiotic contains 9 Billion live probiotic cells, more than 5 times the live active cultures typically found in yogurt, but without the sugar and calories. Unlike many other probiotics, the Bowtrol Probiotic is specially designed to survive the acidic stomach environment and be delivered to the intestines. The article suggested taking a probiotic supplement in addition to the multivitamin. There is a chance that these helpful bacteria (probiotics) can restore the balance among all the bacteria in your gut and keep your digestion healthy and your weight intact.
Probiotics – How Do Those Attune Bars Taste? I previously posted about Attune Bars – a probiotic candy bar. The company graciously sent me a sample pack of the bars. So far I have tasted lemon creme, blueberry vanilla and wild berry. Blueberry vanilla tastes almost like one of those Hershey Cookies and Cream bars, I am not kidding. Lemon creme has a nice smooth flavor with just a bit of lemon tartness and wild berry is also good in that it does not overwhelm you with berry flavor. Sometimes berry flavored products put too much berry flavor in and I find the taste just too strong. The mango/peach bar was probably my least favorite but the taste was true. The chocolate mint bar tasted just like a candy bar. I have to admit the taste was amazing. None of the bars had that bitter aftertaste you often get with health products. I have noticed with some bars you also can get an unpleasant chemical taste but the Attune Bars have none of these drawbacks.
Probiotics – How Do Those Attune Bars Taste?

I previously posted about Attune Bars – a probiotic candy bar. The company graciously sent me a sample pack of the bars. So far I have tasted lemon creme, blueberry vanilla and wild berry.
My favorite bar used to be Luna Bars but I think the Attune bars actually have better  flavor. The only drawback is they must be refrigerated which makes them a little less convenient. They are reasonably priced thought at about $1.59 I think Attune must have really paid attention to how these bars taste. Just to let you know I am not getting any money from the company for this review. It is just my opinion and I wanted to pass it on because I think it is a good product.

Digestive Disorders

Americans spent $107 billion dollars on drugs and antacids in 1992 trying to fight digestive disorders. Digestive disorders are affecting more and more of us. Obviously pharmaceuticals are not the answer. Poor digestion causes us to have stomach aches, gas and just not feel at our best. The digestive process is what powers our body – it converts food into a usable form of energy. If our body is not getting all it can from the food we consume, we tend to feel sluggish and uncomfortable. We have less energy and feel less able to cope with our daily tasks. Digestive problems are thought to be responsible for chronic fatigue, premature aging, arthritis, poor skin and hair, toxicity, allergies and cancer. But if pharmaceuticals are not the solution what is?

The answer is to help the body’s naturally occurring microorganisms do their job. More than 400 different types of bacteria live in the gastrointestinal system and some are good and some are bad. The entire body depends on the colon doing its job properly. The colon’s beneficial bacteria manufacture B vitamins including biotin, niacin, folic acid and pyridoxine. Besides producing the enzyme lactose necessary for digesting milk sugar (lactose), these microorganisms produce antibacterial substances that kill disease-causing agents such as salmonella and some type of E. coli. These bacteria make the digestive tract function at top efficiency.

Two very important beneficial bacteria are acidophilus bacteria and bifid bacterium. Having a slightly acidic PH in the colon helps support these beneficial bacteria and helps keep bad organisms from spreading, since most of the bad organisms don’t like an acidic environment. Unfortunately, the colon’s PH can be altered by many conditions causing the beneficial bacteria to be reduced hence throwing off the delicate balance among the different microorganisms. Conditions that interfere with the colon’s Ph are: high meat and high fat diets, alcohol, stress, and antibiotics. Probiotics, dietary supplements made of beneficial microorganisms, can reintroduce beneficial bacteria. Many people are familiar with yogurt, which contains acidophilus and other foods that are high in probiotics but you can also get probiotics in supplement form. If you suffer from digestive problems or just want to keep your digestive system functioning at peak efficiency you might consider a probioitc supplement.

Click on the banner below to find out how you can improve your digestive system and start feeling better today.
