Some doctors may say there is no connection between weight loss and B12 but what they overlook is how many people are deficient in B12. Studies indicate that B12 deficiencies do not correlate with diet (participants with diets high in foods rich in B12 had just as low levels of B12 as those without). It’s not because people aren’t eating enough B12 rich foods but the vitamin isn’t getting absorbed.
One possible cause of vitamin B12 deficiency – age. Many people don’t realize it but as they age their risk for a deficiency increases. Two factors that lead to B12 deficiency are an insufficient diet and declining rates of absorption.

The natural process of aging disrupts the digestive tract. This is caused by the cumulative effect of the typical American diet. The stomach lining gradually gets weaker so it can’t produce hydrochloric acid – the agent that “extracts” Vitamin B12 from what you eat.

Also consuming antacids and various remedies for an upset or acid stomach can also be blamed for the body’s inability to integrate Vitamin B12. Bacteria are another leading cause of Vitamin B12 deficiency. One such bacterium is the Helicobactor pylori, which puts the stomach at risk for moderate to serious ulcers, thereby aggravating a person’s deficiency.

Research in the field of nutrition reports that when the stomach lining fails to produce a protein called the intrinsic factor, the vitamin B12 will not bind, which prevents the body from absorbing B 12 via the small intestine.

It is important to make sure you get enough B 12 and that is absorbed properly as it is an effective digestion aid. It allows food to be properly and efficiently absorbed, and it promotes the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.

Additionally B 12 is thought to responsible for more stable moods maintaining excellent memory functions, increased concentration and mental alertness.

Diarrhea is uncomfortable, inconvenient and can be embarrassing. If it is of any comfort it happens to nearly everyone. Of all reported illnesses in the U.S., diarrhea is the second most common. The average adult has diarrhea four times a year and the average child has seven to 15 cases of diarrhea by the time they reach age five.

To reduce your risk of diarrhea, make sure you cook food for recommended amount of time. Also, wash everything your food comes in contact with such as hands, utensils, and surfaces. Diarrhea can also be caused by medication, food in tolerances and chronic conditions. Most diarrhea can treated and most importantly prevented naturally by taking a digestive supplement. Diarrhea can occur when our digestive systems experience a decrease in beneficial bacteria. As a preventative measure consider using a digestive aid which keeps your system in balance thus preventing outbreaks of diarrhea.

Persistent diarrhea calls for a trip to the doctor otherwise, diarrhea is easily conquered by natural remedies. Natural remedies will help you avoid some of the bad side effects caused by over the counter medications.

Here are some suggestions:

Agrimony - Agrimony, a table tea in France, is an instant remedy for loose bowels. You may be able to find this tea or the leaves in a health food store and it is easily available online.

Activated Charcoal – Activated charcoal, a substance so detoxifying it is used in filters and by astronauts, absorbs and eliminates toxins creating diarrhea. You can find it at your drugstore or grocery store health food section.

Apple – Peeled or grated apples, especially sour apples, are wonderful help in stopping adult or chldren’s diarrhea.

Barley - Cooked barley or barley water is an excellent infant diarrhea aid.

Nutmeg – Add a pinch of freshly grated nutbeg to pepermint or other herbal tea or on the apple or oatmeal.

Oatflakes – Cooked oatmeal soothes the digestive system and helps to control adult and children’s diarrhea.

Peppermint – Peppermint tea allays spasms and controls diarrhea. Don’t give to infants though as some children react to the menthol.

Rice - Cooked rice is useful controlling irritable diarrhea.

Gastronic Dr. promotes healthy digestion and encourages comfort after meals. A better balanced digestive system means less bouts of diarrhea and gas. The herbs used in Gastronic Dr. have been specifically selected and are suitable to use in conjunction with prescription and over-the-counter medication, if required.
That does not mean it might not be important,” Loveland says. “The percentage of kids with autism that have gastrointestinal difficulties can be 10 percent or 70 percent depending whom you study, and how you study them. So it’s not clear how many of them have it, or how many are relieved of it through diet.” Dr. Robert Sears, who wrote “The Autism Book” said any parent starting their child on the diet should give it a good six months, but children age 7 and older need at least a year.
Does the GfCf Diet Work

Katherine Loveland, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of the Center of Human Development Research at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, said the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement recently that said it’s possible that kids with autism have some problems that are related to gastric disturbances, but they do not see evidence that this is a cause of autism.

So it’s not clear how many of them have it, or how many are relieved of it through diet.”

Dr. Robert Sears, who wrote “The Autism Book” said any parent starting their child on the diet should give it a good six months, but children age 7 and older need at least a year.

Food allergies, Sears said, are the single most common medical problem shared by children with autism.

He devotes an entire chapter of the book to diet changes, in which he writes about the GFCF diet. He said one survey of 1,800 autistic children revealed 65 percent showed improvement on the diet.

He said chronic diarrhea resolves, first words emerge, hyperactivity diminishes, and potty training becomes easier.

Sears said the diet works best in conjunction with supplements, including digestive enzymes, probiotics, cod liver oil, vitamins and minerals.

Sears drives home the point by saying early intervention “can change a life.” He also says he has had cases of children who don’t fit the classic story of regressive autism with gastrointestinal symptoms, but who still benefit from the GFCF diet.

Here is a three minute video explaining why the diet works to help with attention improvement and language:

That’s because these dried fruits are loaded with minerals and vitamins that rev up your body’s own antioxidant production. The antioxidants in your cells get rid of free radicals in your body. Free radicals are one of things that cause your body to age and they make you more susceptible to things like heart disease and cancer. Prunes rank foremost in the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) list of high-scoring antioxidant fruits. In fact, prunes register off the scale on the Orac index, which measures how effective food is at neutralizing damaging free radicals. Prunes are also good for your skin. The high levels of antioxidants in prunes means that eating just 4 of these super fruits a day is as good for your skin as any expensive anti-wrinkle creams. Prunes are high in phenolic compounds. This makes prunes not only anti-aging but anti inflammatory and anti-clotting as well. Prunes also have Vitamin A and vitamin C to help maintain healthy hair and skin. Prunes also have Vitamin A and vitamin C to help maintain healthy hair and skin. Chromium which maintains healthy blood sugar levels. Lutein to prevent eyesight failure and slow-release sugars to keep energy levels up during the day. They are a low GI food which is ideal for people with insulin resistance and diabetes.

Prunes are a low sodium food and a have a high potassium level meaning the fruit is a wonderful way to regulate your blood pressure and reduce water retention within the body.

Prunes also have a high amount of magnesium in them. It is already known that magnesium is quite useful to the aging body and helps us to achieve and maintain sufficient energy levels. Magnesium is a mineral important at working to relax the muscles, nerves and blood vessels in the body. It helps to alleviate sore muscles, effects of asthma and migraine headaches.

About half of the fiber in prunes is insoluble and helps move food through the digestive track. Some foods in our diet such as meat can ‘sit’ in the intestines undigested for a very long time. This can be cause bad bacteria to build up in your intestines which can lead to digestive disorders. Prunes’ insoluble fiber provides food for the “friendly” bacteria in the large intestine. When these helpful bacteria ferment prunes’ insoluble fiber, they produce a short-chain fatty acid called butyric acid, which serves as the primary fuel for the cells of the large intestine and helps maintain a healthy colon. These helpful bacteria also create two other short-chain fatty acids, propionic and acetic acid, which are used as fuel by the cells of the liver and muscles.

So about 1/4 of prunes a day is about a close as you can get to taking a sip from the fountain of youth.

Stress and Digestive Problems We work hard on digestive disorders prevention during the year but during the holidays it is hard to resist all the temptations. Here are some tips to help keep your digestive system healthy and still enjoy your holiday. Eat light meals throughout the day - During the holidays large heavy meals are often served. If you eat several small meals, when you get to the big meal you are not tempted to overdo. Also, the more food you eat in a short period of time, the more pressure on your esophageal sphincter, the muscle that keeps digested food down where it belongs. When the pressure gets to high, food and acid will back up, causing heartburn. Too much food can also slow down your whole digestive system, leading to stomachaches and constipation. Make sure you remember to eat fruits, vegetables, low-fat protein and fiber, all of the things that may be in short supply during the holidays. Do some exercise - Physical activity is excellent for stress relief and can help offset any extra calories [...]

We work hard on digestive disorders prevention during the year but during the holidays it is hard to resist all the temptations.

Do some exercise - Physical activity is excellent for stress relief and can help offset any extra calories you might take in during the festivities. Stress can intensify intestinal cramping. Take a walk, do some housework or shovel snow. If you workout at the gym, keep your workout light, though. Intense exercise can intensify stomach cramps and may stimulate your appetite, making it hard not to overeat with all the rich food around.

Limit foods which have a reputation for being poorly tolerated by the digestive system – such as fried foods, high-fat foods, alcohol, and diet soft drinks. Holiday foods are generally high in sugar and fat. Both cause weight gain and excess weight can cause an upset stomach. Fat slows down the digestion and can trigger reflux. Other foods known to cause reflux include chocolate, coffee, alcohol, mints, and acidic foods so try to consume these in moderation.

Include consumption of high fiber foods - Fiber is usually absent from the holiday dinner table. Most holiday dinners don’t include bran, whole wheat or high fiber vegetables unless they are drowning in butter. Constipation is usually the result of a low fiber diet plus the bloat associated with makes it hard to fit into your holiday clothes not to mention the discomfort.

Reduce holiday stress - Stress — triggered by mall shopping, cooking, cleaning, travel, and family conflict — can cause upset stomach and heartburn. On top of that, many people cope with stress by overeating and drinking too much. Sometimes you just need to stop and go someplace quiet and just breathe. One day last year during the crazy holiday season I spent an afternoon at our local nature center. It was cold and everyone was out at the mall so there was hardly anyone around. I just sat for awhile looking at the trees and flowers and after awhile I felt much more relaxed.

As a preventative measure consider using a digestive aid such as Gastronic Dr. Gastronic Dr promotes balance and calm in the digestive system

How Enzymes Break Down Fructose According Dr. Oz, if a sweet treat leaves you feeling like the Goodyear blimp found its way into your digestive system, check the label – fructose may be the culprit. Fructose is a sweetener in soft drinks and foods including some low-fat yogurts, cereals, cereal bars and even salad dressings and ketchup. For some people, even a small amount, for instance can lead to abdominal cramping, bloating, pain and diarrhea. Fructose can speed through some people’s digestive tracts too quickly for it all to be absorbed. What isn’t digested ends up in the colon, feasted upon by bacteria, producing excessive acid and gas perhaps leading to diarrhea. According to the Mayo Clinic the phrase “fructose intolerance” is a general term that describes two possible conditions: * Hereditary fructose intolerance. People with hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare genetic disorder, lack an enzyme that breaks down fructose. This serious disorder, which is usually diagnosed at a young age, can lead to liver and kidney damage. * Fructose malabsorption. People with fructose malabsorption have difficulty digesting fructose.
