Your pet may become anemic because onions cause oxidative damage to the hemoglobin resulting in an acute anemia depending on the amount of intake. Your pet also may become weak and have trouble breathing. The best thing to do if your pet ingests onions is to get them to the vet right away.
June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. Our paper had a great article on the new food pyramid which is actually called the food plate now instead of the Food Pyramid. MyPlate, the USDA’s new icon that replaces the Food Pyramid to guide Americans in eating a healthful diet, recommends filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Any fresh, canned, frozen or dried fruit or vegetable or 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice counts. Dietitians advise eating a variety of colors. Most of colors provide different nutrients so if you stick to just one color you will miss out on important vitamins and minerals.

Here is a look at what each color of fruit and vegetable group offers, according to the American Dietetic Association:

Red - Beets, cherries, cranberries, red peppers, pomegranates, red onions, watermelon and tomatoes: May support heart health, immunity and vision and reduce cancer risks.

Blue/Purple – Blueberries, blackberries, purple cabbage, eggplant and plums: Many have antioxidant and anti-aging benefits, keep memory sharp and the urinary tract healthy and reduce cancer risks.

Deep Yellow/orange – Pineapple, apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, corn, peaches and sweet potatoes’ Reduces risk of some cancers and supports healthy vision and immunity.

Green – Broccoli,, asparagus, avocados, grapes, green beans, kiwis and leafy greens such as spinach: May help maintain healthy vision and reduce cancer risks.

White/tan/brown - Bananas, cauliflower, onions, white potatoes and turnips: Some contain nutrients that may reduce the risk of cancer and help support heart health.

The Department of Agriculture introduces the new food icon, MyPlate, to replace the MyPyramid image as the government’s primary food group symbol. An easy-to-understand visual cue to help consumers adopt healthy eating habits, MyPlate is consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Here is a short video explaining the new icon and how it relates to the new food pyramid.

Benefits of 70% Dark Chocolate Cocao

Here are some simple changes you can make to improve your health. None of these are expensive, they are all easily found in your area – i.e. you don’t have to live in a big city to find them and they are easy to do. These are therapeutic lifestyle changes diet is one of the easiest to start with.

1. Eat more chocolate: make sure it’s dark chocolate and get the real cocoa-based stuff, with 70 percent or more cocoa. Dark chocolate is full of flavonoids which do wonderful things for your arteries and other parts of your body. Chocolate also releases dopamine, a hormone that makes you feel good.

2. Eat more nuts: Dry roast walnuts in your oven (275 degrees for 9 minutes)for a snack full of omega-3-fatty acids, which will give better hair, a healthier heart, better moods and flexible joints.

3. Sniff away stress: Use lemon or lavender scents to help de-stress. These two fragrances are reported to help you relax. Essential oil such as lemon and lavender can be found in health food stores or the health food section of your grocery store

4. Yoga: Take up yoga to improve energy, flexibility and maybe even your attitude. You can get DVD’s from your library and find routines that take as few as 10 minutes and are for the beginner.

5. Walk: Walk more, and keep track of how far you’ve gone with a pedometer. You can find a good one for just $15 or so. Aim for 10,000 steps a day – that’s the equivalent of a five-mile walk. Park your car farther from your destination to get in those extra steps.

6. Pedicures: If you get regular manicures or pedicures, consider investing in your own implements to take to a salon with you. That way you’ll avoid a hard-to-shake fungus you might pick up from another customer.

7. Drink more water: Buy a refillable stainless-steel water bottle to save money and the planet.

8. Drink Coffee - Coffee is the largest source of antioxidants in the North American Diet. If you add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg you will get even more health benefits. See our post Cinnamon A Super Food For Your Body

Food and brain power are connected. There are actually foods that will increase your brain power. This is especially helpful as we get older because we tend to lose brain function and eating the right foods will help us hold on to what we have. Here are some suggestions from Elizabeth Somer’s Book, “Eat Your Way to Happiness” which will keep your brain healthy and your memory sharp:

DHA Omega-3s - These are what keep walls of the brain cells flexible, fluid and able to communicate with each other. Your body can’t make DHA so you have to get it from food or supplements. One study indicated that people who took DHA daily for six months improved so much that their brains became three years younger. Try to get 900 milligrams a day. Get an algae based DHA supplement, eat DHA enriched foods and eat salmon and trout. Taking a DHA Omega-3 supplements also helps keep your healthy. See our post Diet and Your Hair

If your look for a good Omega 3 supplement, consider Omega 3 and Omega 6 interact with each other, so the balance between them is crucial for good health. Together they affect the production of hormonal-type messengers called eicosanoids, which have an impact on many functions at a cellular level. With Hypercet Omega 3-6-9, you can be certain you’re receiving the right mix of Omega-3 and 6. Now you won’t have to rigidly balance your diet in order to maximize the properties of these essential oils.

Brightly colored fruits and vegetables - Phyto chemicals in foods like dark-green spinach, pumpkin, red raspberries and bright yellow peppers not only directly disarm free radicals, they also switch on genes that muster your body’s own antioxidant defense system for a double whammy. Try to get nine servings a day.

Water - Even a little dehydration can blur your thinking. Drink enough so that your urine looks pale at all times. Sip, don’t chug. Your body can’t absorb more than 1 cup in 20 minutes.

Nuts – Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and pecans, all have healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats that help keep your arteries clear which helps carry blood to your brain. They also provide the raw materials your body uses to produce mood-boosting serotonin in your brain. Try to get an ounce a day which is 12 walnut halves or 24 almonds.

Dark Chocolate – Real dark chocolate that’s 70 percent or more cocoa boosts your levels of feel-good dopamine and provides flavonoids, which help keep a arteries young. Try to get 1/4 ounce four times a day. The 70 percent might not taste so good to you if you are not used it so you may need to start with the 60 percent or work up to the 70 percent. Your taste buds will gradually adjust. Just get the plain chocolate if you add fillings and flavorings you start getting too many calories. Dark chocolate and walnuts make a super food combination. To find what makes this such a great combo see our post
That’s because these dried fruits are loaded with minerals and vitamins that rev up your body’s own antioxidant production. The antioxidants in your cells get rid of free radicals in your body. Free radicals are one of things that cause your body to age and they make you more susceptible to things like heart disease and cancer. Prunes rank foremost in the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) list of high-scoring antioxidant fruits. In fact, prunes register off the scale on the Orac index, which measures how effective food is at neutralizing damaging free radicals. Prunes are also good for your skin. The high levels of antioxidants in prunes means that eating just 4 of these super fruits a day is as good for your skin as any expensive anti-wrinkle creams. Prunes are high in phenolic compounds. This makes prunes not only anti-aging but anti inflammatory and anti-clotting as well. Prunes also have Vitamin A and vitamin C to help maintain healthy hair and skin.
Prunes are high in phenolic compounds. This makes prunes not only anti-aging but anti inflammatory and anti-clotting as well. Prunes also have Vitamin A and vitamin C to help maintain healthy hair and skin. Chromium which maintains healthy blood sugar levels. Lutein to prevent eyesight failure and slow-release sugars to keep energy levels up during the day. They are a low GI food which is ideal for people with insulin resistance and diabetes.

Prunes are a low sodium food and a have a high potassium level meaning the fruit is a wonderful way to regulate your blood pressure and reduce water retention within the body.

Prunes also have a high amount of magnesium in them. It is already known that magnesium is quite useful to the aging body and helps us to achieve and maintain sufficient energy levels. Magnesium is a mineral important at working to relax the muscles, nerves and blood vessels in the body. It helps to alleviate sore muscles, effects of asthma and migraine headaches.

About half of the fiber in prunes is insoluble and helps move food through the digestive track. Some foods in our diet such as meat can ‘sit’ in the intestines undigested for a very long time. This can be cause bad bacteria to build up in your intestines which can lead to digestive disorders. Prunes’ insoluble fiber provides food for the “friendly” bacteria in the large intestine. When these helpful bacteria ferment prunes’ insoluble fiber, they produce a short-chain fatty acid called butyric acid, which serves as the primary fuel for the cells of the large intestine and helps maintain a healthy colon. These helpful bacteria also create two other short-chain fatty acids, propionic and acetic acid, which are used as fuel by the cells of the liver and muscles.

So about 1/4 of prunes a day is about a close as you can get to taking a sip from the fountain of youth.

Eyesight - Avocados help protect your vision because they are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants found in the retina that keep eyes healthy. They also may help prevent age-related problems, like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Cancer fighter - Extracts from avocados kill or stop the growth of precancerous cells that lead to oral cancer and may have a similar effect on other cancers, according to a recent study. Researchers credit the fruit’s unique combo of nutrients-which include folate and vitamins C and E.

Benefits of avocado and tomato – Add avocado to salsa for a bigger health payoff. A study from The Ohio State University found that people absorbed four-and-a half-times more of the cancer-fighter lycopene from the tomatoes when avocado was added; the healthy fats help you absorb more nutrients.

Healthier fat - Add avocado to your sandwich. It has 4 grams of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat (which lowers cholesterol), 2 grams of fiber, and 1 gram of protein per ounce, making it a lower-fat, more filling substitute for mayo.

So if a month is 28 days that is just about the right amount of time to make each of these Dr. Oz health tips a habit.

1. (January) Get more sleep: Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night to help your body heal, restore and protect its systems and vital organ functions.

2. (February) Lose 10 pounds: Losing weight is perhaps the most common New Year’s resolution. But losing just 10 pounds can cut your risk of heart attack, osteoarthritis, cancer and other ailments. A new study shows that for each pound of body weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in knee joint stress among overweight and obese people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers say the results indicate that even modest weight loss may significantly lighten the load on your joints. So even five pounds would be helpful.

3. (March) Start the day with yoga: Dr Oz has a seven minute yoga routine. You can find it at Dr. Oza Beginners Yoga Lesson I checked it out and it is not too difficult. None of the horrible twisty pretzel stuff you see in other videos.

4. (April) Learn CPR: More than 300,000 people die each year of cardiac arrest outside of the hospital, CPR can increase their chance of survival.

5. (May) Make time for loved ones: Strong social connections can keep you mentally active, reduce stress and keep you emotionally fit. I have found that volunteering is a great way to make new social connections.

6. (June) Swap your beverages: Beverages are a major hidden source of calories. Decide to drink water, no sugar flavored sparkling water, or reduced sugar sports drink if you are really thirsty. In terms of the sweetness of your soda, there are approximately 40 grams of refined sugar in a 12 oz soft drink, which equals about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Colas generally have 9-10 teaspoons of sugar, while orange sodas are an even sweeter choice with closer to 13 teaspoons per 12 oz.

7. (July) Eat black rice: This new super food has more anthocyanin antioxidants and more fiber per serving than blueberries and it’s cheaper too. Many stores sell black rice, sometimes under the label of “Indonesian Black Rice” or “Forbidden Rice.”

8. (August) Engage in waist management: The visceral fat around your middle has big effect on your overall health. Your waist should measure half your height. If you are 62 inches tall, your waist should be 31 inches.

9. (September) Know your five: Evaluate your health by knowing five key barometers – blood pressure, waist size, weight, cholesterol and fasting blood sugar.

10. (October) Take a daily multivitamin: This can help you get what your diet may not give you. For best results, take half in the morning and half in the evening. Though there is no hard evidence that vitamins and weight loss are connected, taking vitamins will help your energy level increase. With an increased energy level you will find it easier to exercise and eat less.

In November and December you can celebrate the new healthier you and you will feel so good you did it.

One of the big differences in the French diet versus the American diet is red wine which is bursting with health benefits. Besides being good for your heart, it may also aid in the fighting against gum disease, a Canadian study reports. Danish researchers report, people who buy wine tend to buy healthier food than those who purchase beer. Research also indicates that light to moderate drinking may help you lose weight…

The important antioxidant in red wine that does so much good is resveratrol. In addition to wine, resveratrol is also found in grape skins, blueberries, cranberries and other plants, and recent animal and in vitro studies indicate that it can have a positive effect on helping to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, supporting insulin health and optimizing metabolic and immune pathways that protect cells and improve mitochondrial function.

There is a new product out which is different than other diet supplements in that it uses a combination of natural and herbal ingredients designed to help the body stay healthy while losing weight. How? By mimicking certain aspects of the Mediterranean diet.

The product is called
Resveratrol Select. And one capsule of Resveratrol Select includes as much resveratrol as 200 glasses of wine—without the added calories of alcohol. But consuming resveratrol alone isn’t enough to help with weight loss—so the manufacturers of Resveratrol Select also added a different type of antioxidant, Green Tea Extract (EGCG), over time, green tea consumption helps increase metabolism, burn fat and reduce fat storage due to its caffeine and L-theanin content, which can be helpful in maintaining energy for exercise. The supplement also contains Chromium. Chromium, a niacin-based mineral that plays an important role in how the body uses insulin to burn sugars, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for energy

Cooked carrots are high in potassium (this mineral is needed during any illness), phosphorus, and sodium, and also contain pectin, a valuable anti-diarrhea aid The cooked carrots in soup coat the inflamed small bowel, soothe it, and thus promote healing. The soup increases peristalsis, slows down any diarrhea-creating bacteria growth, and also overcomes the need to vomit. Use carrot soup for an entire week, and meanwhile, as soon as the infant seems ready for additional food, you can add bananas to the diet.

Poultice – For a healing and antiseptic poultice for use on cuts, wounds, abscesses, and inflammations, use either raw, grated carrots or cooked, mashed carrots.

Here are some of research studies that show what are the benefits of eating carrots.

In a study attempting to prove the therapeutic value of carrots researchers at the Wolfson Gastrointestinal Laboratory in Edinburgh, Scotland showed that cholesterol level reduces by 11 percent if seven ounces of raw carrots a day is consumed for three weeks.

A study conducted at the Mario Negri Institute of Pharmacological Research in Italy found subjects that ate more carrots had one third the risk of heart attack as compared with those who ate fewer carrots.

British researchers discovered that increasing beta-carotene consumption from 1.7 to 2.7 milligrams a day reduced lung cancer risk more than 40 percent. The average carrot contains about three milligrams of Beta-carotene. In another cancer related study, researchers found that eating carrots reduced the risk of colon cancer by as much as 24 percent.

Researches found that people who ate the most Beta-carotene had a forty percent lower risk of macular degeneration compared with those who consumed the least.
