What Dr. Chopra Says About Spiritual Optimism I’ve just finished reading Why Is God Laughing? by Deepak Chopra, and I feel encouraged. Times have been so tough lately and I have felt so lost. I listened to the book on CD and I think Dr. Chopra has a lot of good healing advice in this book. If you feed sad, lonely and scared a lot, I think this book will help you. The book is in two parts. At first Dr. Chopra tells you a story about a real successful comedian whose father recently died. The comedian is shaken up after his Dad dies. The Dad comes to talk to him after his death to give his son some advice and help him fix his life. The comedian goes on a journey with a spiritual guide who comes in the form a person and when the journey is over the comedian is a different more peaceful person. Then Dr. Chopra talks about the 10 steps to spiritual optimism. After I read it, I started to feel better about my life. That maybe things are not so bad, maybe I have a chance to live in a way that I don’t [...]

The comedian goes on a journey with a spiritual guide who comes in the form a person and when the journey is over the comedian is a different more peaceful person.

Then Dr. Chopra talks about the 10 steps to spiritual optimism. After I read it, I started to feel better about my life. That maybe things are not so bad, maybe I have a chance to live in a way that I don’t feel so awful all the time. Maybe I can feel joy and appreciate the love people give me.

I want to try so I am putting the steps here on the website so you can see them too. You can get the book at the library, buy it or get the why is god laughing ebook. Just try to get it somehow and read it or listen to it on CD. I think it will help you feel better each day.

I am going to list the steps here but you should listen or read the explanation in the book to help you understand better.

10 Steps to Spiritual Optimism

1. The healthiest response to life is laughter. (Antidotes fear and sorrow)

2. There is always a reason to be grateful. (Antidotes victimization)

3. You belong to the scheme of the Universe. There’s nothing to be afraid of. You are safe. (Antidotes insecurity)

4. Your soul cherishes every aspect of your life. (Antidotes feeling undervalued)

5. There is a plan. And your soul knows what it is. (Antidotes meaninglessness)

6. Ecstasy is the energy of Spirit. When life flows, ecstasy is natural. (Antidotes inertia)

7. There is a creative solution to every problem. Every responsibility holds the promise of abundance. (Antidotes failure)

8. Obstacles are opportunities in disguise. (Antidotes inflexibility)

9. Evolution leads the way through desire. (Antidotes hypocrisy)

10. Freedom is letting go. (Antidotes attachment)

Dr. Chopra also talks about the value of meditation. See our post 5 Minute Chakra Guided Meditation. I believe the Chakra meditation is particularly good for removing stuck energy which is something Dr. Chopra talks about in the book.

This remedy contains a selection of homeopathic ingredients known to improve energy levels and temperament during the winter season. Coping with Holiday Depression Each of us has our own reasons for coming down with the holiday blues. It may be the memories of a past time when we were much happier or it may be the financial stress of the cost of gift giving or the emotional stress of having to interact with family members we have difficulty getting along with. Also, we may have unrealistic expectations of our holiday time and end up feeling disappointed and sad. Some of us might also have Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) where you feel down simply because your body is not getting enough sunlight. If your depression does stem from SAD, see the banner at the top or bottom of the post, for help with your seasonal affective disorder. Whatever the reason for the sadness there are some ways to help yourself feel better: According to Richard Carlson, author of “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” it helps if you recognize that moods are transitory i.e. they change constantly.
Coping with Holiday Depression

Each of us has our own reasons for coming down with the holiday blues.

Whatever the reason for the sadness there are some ways to help yourself feel better:

According to Richard Carlson, author of “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” it helps if you recognize that moods are transitory i.e. they change constantly. It may be that you are feeling bad at the moment and all seems lost but in a few hours your mood may shift back up. Dr. Carlson advises simply recognizing you are experiencing a low mood and wait it out. Before you know it a better mood will come along.

If your blues are coming from something that is lacking in your life think about following the old adage “Count your blessings.” It seems so simple but it really does work. Make a list of all that you have to be thankful for. In her book “Simple Abundance” Sarah Ban Breathnach advises writing down 5 things you are thankful for every day in a Gratitude Journal.

Take the focus off of yourself. The Mayo Clinic advises patients to reach out and if they are feeling lonely or isolated to seek out community, religious or other social events. Consider volunteering as helping others is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.

Many, many health experts recommend getting some exercise. Even just a quick stroll around the block can help lift your mood.

Make time for yourself. Sometimes we get the blues because we haven’t been very nice to ourselves. Give yourself a break; you deserve it. Take time to do the things YOU love to do and be with the people you enjoy.

Finally, some advice from Oprah via Elizabeth Lesser. Elizabeth Lesser is the author of Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and A Seeker’s Guide: Making Your Life a Spiritual Adventure. Here is what she says about the holidays, “Once we get with the program that no one skates through December, we can get on with having an imperfectly wonderful holiday season. We can let go of wanting a different family and try to enjoy the wacky one we already have. If we have cherished childhood memories, we can be grateful for those we can duplicate in our adult world and wistful, yet mature about those we can’t. Or, if our memories are meager and mean, we can hitch our wagon to new rituals that we create from scratch.”

So if you feel blue, try not to be overly concerned about it because analyzing it just makes it worse. Most of us have felt that way during the holidays at sometime. Try one of the above suggestions. None of them take much time or money and you might feel a bit better.

Chakras Definition I never heard of chakras before one of my yoga teachers told me about them. They sound sort of exotic and out there but they really are not all that complicated or hard to understand. In this great book I found called “The Five Minute Healer”, I found a very simple explanation: “The charkras are centers of vital energy in your body. There are seven of them, from the root chkra at the base of the spine to the crown chakra just above the head. When all the chakras vibrate in blance, we enjoy perfect health and wellbeing” The chakras all have sounds associated with them. Here is a quick and easy guide from the same book: Crown chakra: just above head. Sound: “ee” (as in me). Color: golden white. Feeling: connecting to the higher self and the spiritual Third eye: middle of the brow. Sound: “ay” (as in day). Color: indigo. Feeling: insight; knowledge;intuition. Throat chakra: throat. Sound: “eye”. Color blue. Feeling: calmness; clear communication Heart chakra: heart. Sound: “ah” (as in father) Color: green. Feeling: compassion; love for yourself and others. Solar plexus chakra: between breastbone and navel. Sound: “oh” (as in snow) Color: yellow. Feeling: [...]

I never heard of chakras before one of my yoga teachers told me about them. They sound sort of exotic and out there but they really are not all that complicated or hard to understand. In this great book I found called “The Five Minute Healer”, I found a very simple explanation:

“The charkras are centers of vital energy in your body. There are seven of them, from the root chkra at the base of the spine to the crown chakra just above the head. When all the chakras vibrate in blance, we enjoy perfect health and wellbeing”

The chakras all have sounds associated with them. Here is a quick and easy guide from the same book:

Crown chakra: just above head. Sound: “ee” (as in me). Color: golden white. Feeling: connecting to the higher self and the spiritual

Third eye: middle of the brow. Sound: “ay” (as in day). Color: indigo. Feeling: insight; knowledge;intuition.

Throat chakra: throat. Sound: “eye”. Color blue. Feeling: calmness; clear communication

Heart chakra: heart. Sound: “ah” (as in father) Color: green. Feeling: compassion; love for yourself and others.

Solar plexus chakra: between breastbone and navel. Sound: “oh” (as in snow) Color: yellow. Feeling: personal power.

Sacral chakra: genitals. Sound: “ooo” Color: orange. Feeling: self-worth; positivity

Root chakra: at base of spine. Sound: “uhhh” Color: red. Feeling: grounded.

Here is the meditation called “Intoning the Chakras.” I tried it and found it very soothing and it helped me feel focused. I think I like it because you make sounds and have specific things to think about so my mind doesn’t wander so much and I actually get something out of the meditation.

1. Sit down in a comfortable position and gently close your eyes. Spend a few moments following your breath, just being aware.

2. Take a deep breath and focus your attention on the root chakra, at the bottom of the spine. Imagine the colour red and make a very deep “uhhh” sound, feeling the sound vibrate around the base of your spine and around your genital region, grounding you and making you stable.

3. Continue moving up the chakras – see chart above for the sounds to make, the colors to visualize, the feelings to imagine. As you start, the sounds are deep; as you move upwards, the sounds become progressively higher in tone.

4. Finally, move to the crown chakra, a glowing sphere of golden white at the top of your head. The sound here is a very high “eee” (as in she or me) as high as you can go. As you intone this sound, visualize yourself connection to your highest self and to your sense of the spiritual. Then visulaize all the chakras linking up as the energy of this sound shoots down through your body, balancing as it descends.

5. Sit quitely for a few moments, returining to normality. Stamp your feet and open your eyes. Eat something after this exercise to ground you completely.

Here is a longer, about 10 minutes, guided meditation which help you familiarize yourself with the chakras and help you unblock them.

How to Meditate at Your Desk at Work Here is a great 5 minute guided meditation exercise from a book called “5 Minute Healer” by Jane Alexander. It can be difficult to get the hang of meditation in the beginning. You find your mind wondering and forget to pay attention to your breathing. Sometimes it just seems impossible. If you have a timer, set it for five minutes and try the meditation exercise below. The first couple time it may not feel like much, but keep trying everyday for a few weeks and see if you don’t feel better. Meditation Exercise 1. Sit in any position that feels comfortable and close your eyes. Keep your head upright, shoulders relaxed. 2. Start to breathe steadily and deeply. Don’t try to influence your breathing too much – just notice it for a few minutes. 3. Now start your mantra by intoning a deep “OH” sound that comes from the back of your mouth and throat. Bring the sounds forwards in your mouth, opening your mouth wider, as the sound seamlessly shifts into a slightly higher-pitched “AH.” Finally close your lips and hum the sound “MMM.” Feel it vibrate on your lips. 4.
Meditation Exercise

1. Sit in any position that feels comfortable and close your eyes. Keep your head upright, shoulders relaxed.

2. Start to breathe steadily and deeply. Don’t try to influence your breathing too much – just notice it for a few minutes.

Bring the sounds forwards in your mouth, opening your mouth wider, as the sound seamlessly shifts into a slightly higher-pitched “AH.” Finally close your lips and hum the sound “MMM.” Feel it vibrate on your lips.

4. Repeat twice more. Take it very slowly – make the sounds as rich and vibrant as you can, and extend them for as long as you can.

5. How do you feel now? Do you feel different in any way? Can you feel any tingling of subtle energy, or chi, in your body or head?

Something else you can also do at the office in your chair in five minutes is chair yoga. Chair Yoga is great for beginners and it so easy to do. You don’t need any special equipment and you can do it wherever you can sit down in a chair. Chair Yoga is a great stress reliever and good for keeping your joints lubricated.

Some experts say it takes 21 days to change a bad habit to a good one. Other say it takes longer. Marlatt says “there is not a set time frame.” Each person is different in terms of what triggers bad habits and how quickly they can break them. Whether you’re looking to quite smoking, lose weight or simply get better health, here are five essentials to consider when devising your plan of attack. 1. Put it in writing. Before you can reach your goal, you must first identify it. Marlatt says you need to set a reasonable goal, and then break it up into small steps.

You know yourself best and only you will know how to divide the steps to make it workable for you. Marlatt also recommends creating a “Quit (whatever the bad habit is) Commitment Contract” to hold yourself accountable. Write down details such as what habit you’re giving up and why, how and when you plan to do it, and the friends, family and co-workers you’ve told about your goal.

2. Recognize and neutralize triggers. Just when you”re making progress toward quitting a bad habit, a craving can hit out of nowhere. It can be a smell, a song – you just don’t know. Since don’t know when the triggers might happen, make a plan to deal with them. Marlatt suggests removing temptation if possible. clean out your candy stash or toss your “secret” cigarettes. You can also replace old bad habits with good new ones. For example, if you used to eat your meals on the couch in front of the TV, investing in a dining table and using it can help you change that behavior.

3. Find ways to persevere. TBreaking bad habits is not easy. To help get though the hard times and the daily stress, Marlatt suggests making to-do lists and measuring your progress. Online prompts have also proved effective. A recent study found that receiving e-mail suggestions that include diet and fitness tips can actually promote better habits.

4. Bounce back Nobody’s perfect and don’t be hard on yourself if you slide. In fact, relapse should not be seen as a failure, according to Marlatt. “It’s human, it’s predicable and it’s not the end of the world- it’s part of the process of change,” he says. It’s important to not beat yourself up if fall off the wagon. Consider it a lesson learned and knowing it will help you do better next time.

5. Give yourself a bonus Rewards are a great way to stay motivated and focused. But how often should you reward yourself? “Do it every hour if it helps you stay focused,” Marlatt says. “You can’t spoil yourself.” He recommends choosing healthy rewards that promote your efforts to improve your habits. Massages, meditation, listening to a song you like, are all good ways to reduce tension in your body and improve your general health. Find a healthy reward that works for you.

When it comes to caring for yourself using alternative medicine intuition can be a helpful diagnostic tool. Here is a brief summary of Laura’s techniques to practice intuition. Listen to that nagging feeling – Whenever you start to fret about something, like a relationship or financial matter, pay attention, Day a advises. That hunch may pay off: “Out of the blue, I started to worry about the stock market a few years ago, and I sold everything,” Day says. “I avoided a finacial crisis.” Tune Into Your Senses – Intuition is actually an extension of your senses – so paying attention to the things you smell, hear, taste, touch and see throughout the day can sharpen your intuitiive skills. You’ll pick up that info that could feed your intuition [...]

Do you ever have that feeling that you know the right thing to do even though you have no evidence to support it? Everyone gets a feeling when a situation feels right-or really wrong. It’s our intuition talking, but many of use ignore it.

Laura Day, author of Practical Intuition, shows you how to hone your sixth sense and let it lead you to a more rewarding life.

“I avoided a finacial crisis.”

Tune Into Your Senses – Intuition is actually an extension of your senses – so paying attention to the things you smell, hear, taste, touch and see throughout the day can sharpen your intuitiive skills. You’ll pick up that info that could feed your intuition and lead you in new directions.

Do a reality check – Not every thought that pops up is worth following. Think about what else could be at play, Day suggests. Maybe you’re feeling down because you skipped breakfast and your blood sugar is low. Also, ask yourself if you are reacting to a phobia, rather than your intuition.

Pick up the connection – If your past suddenly comes to mind, it may be a hint about what would make you happy in the future. Say you flashed back to happily playing the violin in school. Your subconscious could be telling you to play again. Not sure why you thought of something? Jot it down and reflect on it. Take action if it feels right.

New Year resolutions always seem to get lost after the first month of the year so I say let’s call them Dr. Oz Health Tips. I really like these tips and I thought an easy way to include them in my life would be to try to introduce a new one every month. Psychologists say it takes 21 days to form a habit. So if a month is 28 days that is just about the right amount of time to make each of these Dr. Oz health tips a habit. 1. (January) Get more sleep: Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night to help your body heal, restore and protect its systems and vital organ functions. 2. (February) Lose 10 pounds: Losing weight is perhaps the most common New Year’s resolution. But losing just 10 pounds can cut your risk of heart attack, osteoarthritis, cancer and other ailments. A new study shows that for each pound of body weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in knee joint stress among overweight and obese people with osteoarthritis of the knee. [...]

Researchers say the results indicate that even modest weight loss may significantly lighten the load on your joints. So even five pounds would be helpful.

3. (March) Start the day with yoga: Dr Oz has a seven minute yoga routine. You can find it at Dr. Oza Beginners Yoga Lesson I checked it out and it is not too difficult. None of the horrible twisty pretzel stuff you see in other videos.

4. (April) Learn CPR: More than 300,000 people die each year of cardiac arrest outside of the hospital, CPR can increase their chance of survival.

5. (May) Make time for loved ones: Strong social connections can keep you mentally active, reduce stress and keep you emotionally fit. I have found that volunteering is a great way to make new social connections.

6. (June) Swap your beverages: Beverages are a major hidden source of calories. Decide to drink water, no sugar flavored sparkling water, or reduced sugar sports drink if you are really thirsty. In terms of the sweetness of your soda, there are approximately 40 grams of refined sugar in a 12 oz soft drink, which equals about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Colas generally have 9-10 teaspoons of sugar, while orange sodas are an even sweeter choice with closer to 13 teaspoons per 12 oz.

7. (July) Eat black rice: This new super food has more anthocyanin antioxidants and more fiber per serving than blueberries and it’s cheaper too. Many stores sell black rice, sometimes under the label of “Indonesian Black Rice” or “Forbidden Rice.”

8. (August) Engage in waist management: The visceral fat around your middle has big effect on your overall health. Your waist should measure half your height. If you are 62 inches tall, your waist should be 31 inches.

9. (September) Know your five: Evaluate your health by knowing five key barometers – blood pressure, waist size, weight, cholesterol and fasting blood sugar.

10. (October) Take a daily multivitamin: This can help you get what your diet may not give you. For best results, take half in the morning and half in the evening. Though there is no hard evidence that vitamins and weight loss are connected, taking vitamins will help your energy level increase. With an increased energy level you will find it easier to exercise and eat less.

In November and December you can celebrate the new healthier you and you will feel so good you did it.

You can try to do this for five minutes to start out with. Just the fact you are stopping and taking time out to breathe will do a lot to lower your stress level. If you can’t do five minutes just try starting out with one minute and work up to five minutes. Exercise: Again you don’t need to walk for miles. Even just basic deep breathing will help bring oxygen to your body and reduce tension.

Spend time with family: Spending good, quality time with friends and family, watching comedy movies with them will really change the way you fight with stress.

Listen to music: With the invention of the IPod listening to music is easier than ever. Try listening to some soothing music for a few minutes. Visualize a place you would like to be while you listen to the music. If you don’t have any relaxing music make sure to add some to your music selection. Some people find the sound of the ocean very soothing. You can find downloads of nature sounds on the internet or on cds. Everyone is different, so experiment with different types of music that you might find relaxing.

Commune with nature: One time after doing marathon Christmas shopping, I stopped at our local arboretum. No one was around and I just sat on a bench and stared at the water in the pond. I felt so peaceful and quiet, it was wonderful.

Be more self aware: Take a moment to think about what you would enjoy doing. Do you have a hobby you enjoy pursuing? Do you like to read? Find something you enjoy doing and then plan your first step toward that activity. For example, if you enjoy painting – buy some supplies, look around for a class or if you like reading, buy a new book. Planning for an activity you enjoy takes your mind off all the things that are stressing you out.

Try stress reducing herbs : Passionflower is a popular herb that has been known to help reduce anxiety. For many, passionflower is as effective as some prescription drugs. St. John’s Wort. St. John’s Wort has been used as a supplement for centuries. It’s a natural herb that can help with both depression and anxiety. It’s best used for mild to moderate cases. Valerian Root. This is another natural anxiety herb. It’s an excellent choice if you also have trouble sleeping. Valerian root can be taken as a tea or a capsule and should be taken approximately two hours before you go to bed. Green tea is a natural herb that you can drink or take in capsule form. It’s loaded with beneficial antioxidants to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle. It’s a natural stress reliever and helps boost metabolism to energize you. It may even help with weight loss.

Try aromatherapy: Many herbs can be used in aromatherapy to calm you in a natural way. Try lavender, rosemary, or peppermint for some popular choices. You can simply open to bottle of essential oil and breathe in the scent or sprinkle a few drops on a handkerchief or you can add one or a combination of these essential oils to your bathwater.

Eat right: Sometimes you may forget about the intense connection between how you feel and what you put into your body. Simply paying attention to getting a natural, well-balanced diet can help you reduce anxiety.
If eating right is difficult for you, be sure to take a multivitamin and avoid chemicals, processed foods, and caffeine when possible.

Use the Worry Time technique: If constant worry is making you crazy, it’s time to pick a worry time. Choose a period of the day – maybe 5 to 6 PM – where you allow yourself to worry as much as you want. Worrying is simply not allowed or tolerated during the rest of the day. Every time you feel worries arise during other times of the day, tell yourself that the worries have to wait for your worry time. You’ll soon find that you won’t really worry all that much during your worry time!

Get a full body massage. A massage is a great way to relax your muscles. It also helps to get blood flowing properly throughout the body, which naturally reduces stress.

Take a warm bath: Taking a warm bath is beneficial to your body and mind. The warmth will help your body relax while the peaceful time to yourself will help you achieve a balanced mindset. Add

Do something funny: The saying “laughter is the best medicine” is no joke! Laughing can definitely help you to relax and therefore reduce stress. Do something you personally find funny, like watching a comedy show, reading a funny book or hanging out with a good friend. In a study published in The Journal of Primary Prevention, scientists taught a group of 33 employees how to “induce their own natural laughter.” Rather than laughing about something funny, the team used deep-breathing techniques and sounds that provoked robust belly laughts. Each morning for three weeks, the participants practiced laughing for 15 minutes. At the end of that period, the researchers found that the group’s “self-regulation, optimism, positive emotions, and social identification” had increased. The effects were there 90 days later.
