<h1>Diet to Prevent Colon Cancer</h1>

Dr. Oz says one in 19 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer at some point, and many aren&#8217;t taking any preventive measures. There are many foods to prevent colon cancer which you can include in your diet. Dr. Oz also mentions vitamin B6, baby aspirin and coffee as part of your diet to prevent colon cancer. Read on to find out why you should include the following foods in your diet.</p>
<p><strong>Fish </strong>- In a large, 22 year study, men who ate fish five times a week had a 40% lower risk of colorectal cancer than men who didn&#8217;t. Salmon is your best bet because it has a high concentration of vitamin D which has been shown to be effective in preventing colon cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Whole grains</strong> &#8211; More highly processed products made with refined flour can create a sluggish insulin response and make the environment in your colon more friendly to tumors.</p>
<p><strong>Beans </strong>- and celery, radishes, cucumbers, peppers and onions, are high in flavonols, compounds that help prevent colon polyps. Studies show that diets high in flavonols were 76% less likely to be associated with recurring advanced-stage polyps.</p>
<p><strong>Coffee</strong> &#8211; I was surprised to find coffee on the list of foods to prevent colon cancer but it seems coffee is a good source of chlorogenic acid., Chlorogenic acid is a compound believed to slow glucose absorption during digestion and it has been shown to help prevent colon cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Sources of Vitamin B6</strong> &#8211; Spinach, bananas, ready to eat cereal which 100% fortified, potatoes and chicken breasts are all good sources of vitamin B6 (<a href="http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb6.asp">National Institute of Health</a>) If you get about 4 mg of B6 a day you can reduce your risk of colon cancer by up to 30%.</p>
<p>The last thing Dr. Oz recommends to add to your diet to prevent colon cancer is two baby aspirin per day. Apparently it can cut your risk as much as 40%. But ask your doctor first to make sure it won&#8217;t interfere with other medication.</p>

<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if you could do something every day to prevent cancer in your body? Well, there is an easy way to do just that by consuming one cancer fighting food each day. According to research, these 10 foods can help protect against a variety of cancers says author Dave Grotto, RD, LDN, who wrote 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life. Here are the ten foods that help to prevent cancer:</p>
<p><strong>Canned Beans </strong>- The have lots of fiber, which helps protect against colon and stomach cancer. Research also show they may help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence in post menopausal women.</p>
<p><strong>Broccoli</strong> &#8211; It is high in a phytochemical called sulforaphane, which helps fight carcinogens, and is rich in the anitoxidant indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Carrots </strong>- Carrots are high in antioxidants that have been associated with a lower risk of bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, larynx and esophageal cancer, as well as postmenopausal breast cancer. Cooked carrots provide better absorption better than raw.</p>
<p><strong>Coffee</strong> &#8211; Some studies indicate that one cup a day may help protect against liver cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Red or purple grapes</strong> &#8211; Grapes ae high in resveratrol, an antioxidant that&#8217;s been shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells (specifically breast, stomach, colon and leukemia).</p>
<p><strong>Lemons</strong> &#8211; They contain a group of chemicals called limonoids, which have been shown to protect against breast, lung, skin and colon cancer.</p>
<p><strong>Mushrooms </strong>- Certain mushrooms such as shitake, are loaded with beta-glucans, which stimulate your body&#8217;s production of cancer-fighting natural killer cells.</p>
<p><strong>Cranberries</strong> &#8211; They&#8217;re high in an antioxidant that&#8217;s been found in studies to fight leukemia, breast, lung and colon cancer cells. You can get them dried or in juice form. Add them to your salad or mix cranberry juice with orange juice for a tangy treat.</p>
<p><strong>Yogurt</strong> &#8211; It is a rich source of probiotics, the &#8220;good&#8221; bacteria in your gut, that help keep &#8220;bad&#8221; bacteria away, especially H. pylori, which is linked to esophageal and stomach cancer. The H. pylori bacteria also causes ulcers. Try greek yogurt if you don&#8217;t like the taste of yogurt. Greek yogurt is thicker and sweeter than regular yogurt and comes in lots of great flavors.</p>
<p><strong>Garlic and Onions </strong>- According to the National Institutes of Health, studies of people from Southern Europe who eat a diet high in garlic and onions show a direct relationship between high consumption of &#8220;allium&#8221; vegetables (all types of garlic, onions, and leeks) and reduced risk of many common cancers.</p>

<p>Just found in Parade Magazine a list of healthy herbs. If you can incorporate these herbs into your weekly menus you will be doing a lot toward preventing some of today&#8217;s common illness such as diabetes, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<br />

<strong>Parsley</strong> &#8211; Parsley is a good source of vitamin C, iron and flavonoids, which the American Institute for Cancer Research says may help protect cells from cancer. Fresh parsley can be added to salads and fresh or dried parsley is a good addition to chicken and fish dishes. Chimichurri sauce used on beef uses a whole cup of fresh parsley.</p>
<p><strong>Turmeric</strong> &#8211; The University of Arizona College of Medicine says curcumin, the active ingredient in this Indian spice, helps prevent joint inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Ruthers University researchers say turmeric may also slow the spread of prostate cancer. Turmeric is typically used in Indian dishes.</p>
<p><strong>Sage</strong> &#8211; A University of Georgia study suggests that sage can prevent tissue damage caused by hgih blood sugar and may even offer protection against cardiovascular disease. Sage is great on chicken and turkey dishes.</p>
<p><strong>Rosemary</strong> &#8211; Scientists from Burnham Institute for Medical Research found that rosemary can help protect brain cells from the aging process and from damage caused by the free radicals that lead to Alzheimer&#8217;s. Rosemary, olive oil and garlic is wonderful brushed on potatoes before roasting. Rosemary and lemon is very tasty on chicken.</p>
<p><strong>Cinnamon</strong> &#8211; The U.S. Department of Agriculture says cinnamon may lower cholesterol, reduce blood sugar, and slow the proliferation of cancerous cells in people with leukemia. Cinnamon tastes good in coffee, oatmeal, applesauce and many baked good.</p>

Here is an easy and cheap way to cut your chance of death from breast cancer disease &#8211; exercise. Five hours a week of walking or any moderate aerobic workout reduces your risk by more than half according to a new study from the University of South Carolina. And just 20 minutes will reduce the risk by a third. </p>
<p>Researchers say this study, involving more than 14,000 women, is the first to objectively connect fitness levels and the risk of dying from breast cancer. Will exercise cut your chances of getting the disease in the first place? Other studies say it will by about 20 percent.</p>
<p><strong>Here are some ways to get in your 20 minutes a day:<br />
</strong><br />
1. <strong>Take the stairs instead of the elevator.</strong></p>
<p>2. <strong>Park your car far away from your building and walk briskly or if it is not a safe area walk around your building a few times or just walk around the front part of the parking lot.<br />
</strong><br />
3. <strong>Get a group of friends together to walk.<br />
</strong><br />
4.<strong> Get one of those <a href="http://www.womanwork.net/?p=68">walking DVD&#8217;s</a><br />
and walk in front of your television.</strong></p>

<p>There is huge line of products out there promising to make us look younger. But you know there are so many natural ways to slow the aging process and most of them are very inexpensive. <a href="http://www.aolhealth.com/healthy-living/beauty-skin-care/look-younger">AOL Health</a> did a great post on home remedies for anti-aging. They asked their readers for their own home grown remedies and here are some of their tips:</p>
<p><strong>Stress Less<br />
</strong><br />
Stress can cause us to tense our facial muscles which causes wrinkles and can be hard on our entire body. Our bodies are not designed to be in the &#8220;fight&#8221; mode all the time. Learning how to get rid of those stressful feelings can go along way toward keeping your body young not to mention lower your blood pressure. Many people say meditation is the best way to de-stress but you can also do breathing exercises, take a relaxing bath, listen to soothing music, do yoga, or exercise. Just pick one that works for you and you will feel so much better and look younger too.</p>
<p><strong>Keep Covered</strong></p>
<p>Minimize your exposure to strong sun. You probably know the sun is strongest during 10 am and 2 pm. If you can avoid being out in the sun during those times, it is like taking a magic anti-aging pill. Stay out of tanning booths at all times. You need some sun exposure to get the proper amount of Vitamin D. See our post  <a href="http://www.curepure.com/?p=134">Safely Avoid Vitamin D deficiencies &#8211; Sun Exposure</a>.  If you are out in the sun make sure you use sunscreen. You will keep your skin smooth and reduce your chance of getting skin cancer. Also wear a hat. So many people forget to do this. Wearing a wide  brimmed hat will keep you cooler and protect the delicate skin on your face. If you color your hair, it will also prevent your color from fading.</p>
<p><strong>Moisturize at Any Price</strong></p>
<p>One AOL Health respondent said &#8220;Another friend said this is what works for him: &#8220;Slather on moisturizer twice a day. It doesn&#8217;t matter how expensive or cheap the moisturizer is, as long as it is slathered on. If you have money for a more expensive one, good, but any will do.&#8221; I can speak from personal experience and tell you that does work. My skin is still very soft even though I am older because I have always used moisturizer. I put mine on right after I step out of the shower so the water gets locked in my skin.</p>

<p><strong>Watercress -</strong> Not only is this peppery green full or iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and lutein, but compounds in these greens &#8211; isothiocyanates &#8211; may thwart a potent carcinogen in tobacco.</p>
<p><strong>Arugula</strong> &#8211; Women who eat the most from this food family score the same on brain tests as women who are two years younger. Plus, it has the power to turn on a cancer-fighting substance in your body that makes prostate-,breast, and colon cancer cells die. </p>
<p><strong>Spinach </strong>- Its powerful ingredients include magnesium, a nutrient most of us don&#8217;t get enough of. People who eat three or more servings of spinach slow mental decline due to aging by as much as 40 percent. If you don&#8217;t like the taste use baby spinach the taste is less strong. Other leafy greens that are good are kale and collard greens. </p>
<p>I have found that mixing these greens with other kinds of lettuce gives you the best taste results. I still really like iceberg lettuce so I mix in the baby spinach or the watercress until I have about 50/50 mix. </p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t like mixing up your own salad, you can buy the prepackaged kind in the produce department of your grocery store.</p>

<p>I was always told to avoid grapes in my diet. Nutritionists routinely warned people off of grapes because of their high sugar content. Then it was discovered that red grapes were very high in anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are defined as flavonoid pigments found in many varieties of vegetables and fruits. Theyâ€™re a good source of antioxidants. You probably heard about anthocyanins in relation to the <a href="http://www.curepure.com/diabetes/acai-berry-information/">Acai Berry</a>.</p>
<p>Anyway I just saw a blurb in our paper (in the Dr. Mehmet Oz section) that says eating grapes can help prevent clogged arteries. A study showed that just three hours after eating the equivalent of 1 and 1/4 cups of grapes, people had better blood flow through their arteries than did people who drank a sugar solution. Blood-flow benefits were even better after three weeks of daily grape-eating.</p>
<p>Grapes have only 75 calories in a 1 and 1/4 cup serving.</p>
<p>Grapes may even help protect your blood vessels from fatty meals &#8211; something that normally does immediate damage. Early research suggests that grapes may help protect your blood pressure from salty foods too.</p>

Understanding the diseases that may lead to colon cancer is one way to help you understand how to prevent it. Here are some more suggestions from M. Sara Rosenthal&#8217;s book <u>50 Ways to Prevent Colon Cancer</u></p>
<p><strong>Know the Rules for People with Inflammatory Bowel Disease</strong> &#8211; Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a serious, chronic condition. IBD means one or more parts of your small or large intestine is inflamed. When inflammation and/or ulceration is confined to the inner lining of the colon (colitis) and rectum (proctitis), you have ulcerative colitis. When the inflammation goes beyond the lining into the actual walls of the intestine, you have Crohn&#8217;s disease, which usually attacks a part of the GI tract above the Colon. Chron&#8217;s can also attack the colon and/or other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. If you have ulcerative colitis the risk of colon cancer is 32 times higher.</p>
<p><strong>Know the Symptom of Ulcerative Colitis</strong> &#8211; Here are the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Abdominal cramps combined with bloody diarrhea and frequent, urgent bowel movements are the most common signs. The diarrhea usually strikes immediatley after meals or at night.</p>
<p><strong>Know the Symptoms of Crohn&#8217;s Disease </strong>- The symptoms are similar to ulcerative colitis; abdominal cramps (usually in your lower right side) and diarrhea, resulting in rectal bleeding, anemia, weight loss, and fever. As with ulcerative colitis, the autoimmune nature of Crohn&#8217;s diesease can aslo cause other body parts to become inflamed.</p>
<p><strong>Get an Accurate Diagnosis of Ulcertative Colitis or Crohn&#8217;s disease </strong>- The only way to distinguish the two diseases is through a tissue sample obtained by a specialist. A GI specialist will get a tissue sample from a sigmoidoscopy or a colonscopy. A doctor would also look at a stool sample and blood tests.</p>
<p><strong>Understand What Genetic Testing for Colon Cancer Means </strong>- You can be tested for a &#8220;colon cancer gene&#8221; but the presence of the genetic mutation for colon cancer does not mean you will get colon cancer, nor does the absence of a genetic mutation mean that you will not get colon cancer. Therefore, genetic screening for colon cancer is not meaningful information for most people.</p>

<p>Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen &#8211; you know Oprah&#8217;s favorite docs always have good practical advice about your health. So here is what they have to say about reducing your cancer risk from grilling. Apparently when you grill, the high temperature creates heterocyclic amines (HA) which may increase the risk of several cancers.</p>
<p><strong>Eliminate the fat </strong>- Drippings from fat create smoke, which surrounds the cooking meat in HAs. Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen advise you to cut holes in foil and line the grill, so drippings pass through.</p>
<p><strong>Marinate your meat </strong>with marinades that contain olive or sesame oil, vinegar, seasoning or mustard to keep your meat moist and protect it from high temperatures.</p>
<p><strong>Microwave your meat first </strong>- You can get rid of 90% of the HAs by microwaving your meat on high for just one and half to two minutes and then throwing away the juices before you grill.</p>
<p><strong>Flip what you are cooking every three minu</strong>tes &#8211; This reduces HAs by keeping surface temperature down and probably helps your food cook more evenly.</p>
<p><strong>Add cruciferous vegetables to your menu</strong> &#8211; Cauliflower,broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts, increase the metabolism of HAs. So be sure to have some of these when you grill. You can have coleslaw or Mann&#8217;s makes a product called broccoli slaw which is shredded broccoli and makes a great coleslaw or stir-fry vegetable.</p>
