Homeopathic Dilutions
Often on this site we discuss homeopathic cures. I thought it might be helpful to give some defintions and helpful information about the field of Homeopathic Medicine.
The formal definition of homeopathy is – A system for treating disease based on the administration of minute doses of a drug that in massive amounts produces symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease itself.
A better explanation is that “like heals like.” In other words, natural products that cause similar symptoms to those experienced by a patient can be used to stimulate the body’s immune system to fight the illness and heal the body. Homeopathic medicine believes giving an extremely small dosage of the substance that causes the same symptoms will stimulate the immune system to fight the “infection” all on its own, obtaining a full recovery. Homeopaths believe the body knows how to heal itself and given the optimum environment, it will heal itself without chemicals or man-made drugs.
People use homeopathy for a range of health concerns, from wellness and prevention, to the treatment of diseases and conditions such as allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, digestive disorders, ear infections, headaches, and skin rashes. According to World Health Organization (WHO), homeopathy is the world’s second leading system of medicine for primary health care. Surveys have indicated that homeopathy is becoming more frequently used as the fist and preferred treatment by medical practioners.
If you are concerned about animal testing know that homeopathic medicines are proven and experimented on healthy people, not on animals.
According to the National Institute of Health, Homeopathic remedies are prepared according to the guidelines of the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS), which was written into law in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938. Homeopathic remedies are regulated in the same manner as nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. However, because homeopathic products contain little or no active ingredients, they do not have to undergo the same safety and efficacy testing as prescription and new OTC drugs.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does require that homeopathic remedies meet certain legal standards for strength, purity, and packaging. The labels on the remedies must include at least one major indication (i.e., medical problem to be treated), a list of ingredients, the dilution, and safety instructions. In addition, if a homeopathic remedy claims to treat a serious disease such as cancer, it needs to be sold by prescription. Only products for self-limiting conditions (minor health problems like a cold or headache that go away on their own) can be sold without a prescription.
So homeopathic remedies are not just some crazy herbal remedies. They are regulated by the FDA and more and more people are using them and getting relief from their symptoms without bad side effects.
