Health Benefits of Cranberries

Health Benefits of Cranberries

Antioxidant Treats

Dr. Oz just posted an article talking about the benefits of cranberries. Though we think of them of as a holiday treat Dr. Oz says for the following reasons we should eat them all year round:
herb
They’re high in antioxidants -
Cranberries have more of these disease-fighters than do apples, red grapes, strawberries, oranges, bananas, pears, grapefruit, pineapples and peaches. Cranberries all contain resveratrol, the heart protector in red wine, which is now being tested against breast, skin, prostate and liver cancer.

Cranberries are heart healthy

Cranberries have antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and anticlotting agents, a combo that helps prevent fats and cholesterol from sticking to artery walls and seems to lower bad LDL cholesterol and boost good HDL cholesterol.

Cranberries help protect your teeth -

Compounds in cranberry juice appear to reduce decay-causing mouth bacteria and dissolve clusters of unhealthy germs. Just be sure to buy sugar-free juice or rinse well with water afterward. Do the same with any sweetened drink.

Cranberries help prevent ulcers and soothe upset tummies -

Scientists suspect that the berries keep ulcer-causing H. pylori bugs from hanging around the stomach and flush other harmful bacteria out of your digestive system.

Parsley – Parsley is a good source of vitamin C, iron and flavonoids, which the American Institute for Cancer Research says may help protect cells from cancer. Fresh parsley can be added to salads and fresh or dried parsley is a good addition to chicken and fish dishes. Chimichurri sauce used on beef uses a whole cup of fresh parsley.

Eggs and Weight Loss

Eggs and Weight Loss

Eggs

The only person who used to talk about how great eggs were for weight loss was Dr. Atkins but now chickeneggsnutritionists have changed their tune. The American Dietetic Association says that healthy folks can have them every day without raising their cholesterol levels- and researchers in Canada believe that eating eggs might help reduce high blood pressure. Eggs have proteins called peptides which seem to work like blood-pressure drugs. Plus by eating eggs, you’ll boost your odds of losing weight. Eggs are have a lot of protein, which takes time to digest. Protein in the morning keeps your stomach full, so you eat less during the rest of the day.

Other so called “bad” foods that can help you lose weight are:

Steak

Again, Dr. Atkins used to be only one advocating eating red meat but now steak has been discovered to be good for weight loss. A lean cut of beef has barely more saturated fat than a similar size skinless chicken breast. Steak is high in protein and can keep you feeling full longer. To get plenty of protein with less fat, choose T-bone, sirloin tip, or other extra-lean cuts — and limit portions to the size of your fist.

Raisins Soaked in Gin – Treatment for Tendenitis

Raisins Soaked in Gin – Treatment for Tendenitis

Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies

I found this in Joe and Teresa Graedon’s column and thought I would pass it on. The column discussed raisins soaked in gin as a cure for tendenitis. Tendenitis affects so many people. Most of my friends have experienced tendenitis at one time or another and as the population continues to age, more us will be facing that variety of pain.

Usually the treatment is anti-inflammatory drugs which can hard on the stomach and the digestive system. You don’t want to trade the tendenitis for a digestive disorder so what is a natural cure.

Apparently raisins soaked in gin or raisins soaked in apple cider work just as well. Here is the recipe:

Golden raisins soaked in 2 parts apple-cider vinegar and 1 part honey. Cover and soak for three days, and take about 10 raisins a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar is amazing home remedy for so many things. See our related postHome Remedies for Ulcers.

Natural Remedies for Stomach Ulcers

I woke one up morning feeling extremely nauseous. The nausea lasted for about five days and then came the abdominal pain. I also had a great deal of gas and was burping constantly. Also I felt what can only be described as a gnawing feeling in my stomach.

I assumed I probably had something putrefying in my intestine. So I tried chamomile and ginger tea and digestive enzymes. I also used a cleansing detox mixture (flaxseed, pea hull fiber, alfalfa, barley and chia seed) which I drank 3 times a day. I got somewhat better but progress was very slow. After about 3 weeks I decided to look up my symptoms online. What my symptoms seem to fit was a stomach ulcer though I did not always feel discomfort after I ate.

I checked out several web sites and found some suggestions for natural remedies for stomach ulcers. One of the more popular one involved a combination of drinking vinegar and baking soda diluted in water and taking cayenne pepper and l – glutamine in capsule form. One person said they felt better almost immediately after consuming the cider vinegar/water/baking soda combination. I have to say I experienced the same thing. I did start to feel better after consuming the solution.
