Cure Holiday Depression With Orange Blossom

Anxiety Cures

With the holidays sometimes comes anxiety and depression. Did you know that orange blossom is a very effective anti-depressant. Pamela Allerdyce author of Natural Remedies A to Z says “The gorgeous scent of these flowers (Citrus aurantium) is distilled into an essential oil which is one of the most effective antidepressants around. It has been documented as slowing down and calming the mind and it is very useful for people who tend to panic and for those who are prone to hyperventilation or are under a great deal of strain. It has even been used clinically to treat cardiac patients with great success.”

Add 4 to 6 drops to a warm bath to soothe and comfort the brain and the body. You can also just put a few drops on a hankerchief and inhale the scent or use an aromotherapy diffuser. I have found orange blossom essential oil in the health section of our local grocery store and it is not too expensive ( $4.00 to $5.00). Aromatherapists use orange blossom (neroli) oil to treat patients suffering from anxiety and insomnia because of its sedative properties. They also use it to treat broken veins and dry skin. It is particularly indicated for use in a facial steam or massage by people with dry, ageing or unduly fragile skin, particularly at the time of menopause.

Colon Cancer Prevention

What Causes Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer accounts for roughly 13 percent of all cancers and is considered the second leading cause of cancer deaths, next to lung cancer. But colon cancer may be preventable through diet. According to M. Sarah Rosenthal author of 50 Ways To Prevent Colon Cancer, “Of all the studies done on cancer and dietary fat, the strongest connections can be made between high fat diets and colon cancer. As for fiber, studies have shown that people who consume large quantities of fiber have lower rates of colon cancer. Studies also show that the number of calories in your diet-regardless of whether they are fat or fiber-can also increase the risk of colon cancer.” Interestingly, diet may even play a role in lung cancer. Studies have shown that people with low intakes of carotene(orange, red, and purple plant foods) have higher rates of lung cancer.

So here are the some of the suggestions from 50 Ways To Prevent Colon Cancer by M. Sarah Rosenthal:

1. Get screened - The purpose of screening for colon cancer is to find out if you have any polyps. Polyps are benign growths that can develop into colon cancer. All colon cancer starts from a polyp, but not all polyps turn into colon cancer.

Natural Cold Remedies

This remedy comes from one of my favorite books called “More Home Cooking – A Writer Returns To The Kitchen” by Laurie Colwin. Laurie says “When you or a loved one is sick with the flu, a very good remedy is:

Hot Lemonade Recipe

Take one big water glass. Into the bottom of it put 1 large spoonful of honey and 1 cinnamon stick. Slice a half a lemon into thin slices and put those in too. Now squeeze the remaining lemon half, and 1 more lemon, and put the juice into the glass. Fill with hot water, stir, and serve to the sick person with the glass wrapped in a napkin.

Mashed Potatoes And Natural Skin Care

Natural Skin Care Recipes

Most of us tend to think of natural remedies as herbal but here is one from a potato. According to Patricia Allardice of Natural Remedies, “Potatoes are the richest natural source of potassium chloride, and raw potatoes can be very useful in first aid. Use a raw, peeled, grated potato around a sprain of any kind. Hot baked potato pulp can also be used to releive tennis elbow or other joint pain. If you are in a great deal of pain, for instance after having a wisdom tooth out, try a hot potato poultice. Spread slices of boiled, peeled potatoes between pieces of flannel and apply to your cheek, as hot as can be tolerated.”

If you have chapped hands mashed potatoes mixed with a little almond oil and orange flower water (you can sometimes find this in Indian or Middle Eastern food stores) can be very soothing.

Did you know a potato is a simple and effective skin freshner. Chill a slice of raw potato and rub your skin with the chilled slice of potato. It will help close the pores and refine the texture of the skin.
