Vitamins, Probiotics and Weight Loss

Probiotics and Weight Loss

Someone wrote in to an advice column in our local paper asking if multivitamins can make you gain weight. The person had apparently begun taking a multivitamin and found their appetitie increased and they began to gain weight. The answer was that it is possible that a multivitamin can activate some of the bacteria in your gut in ways that make you metabolize food better and absorb more calories. The article suggested taking a probiotic supplement in addition to the multivitamin. There is a chance that these helpful bacteria (probiotics) can restore the balance among all the bacteria in your gut and keep your digestion healthy and your weight intact.

You can also ask your doctor do I need a multivitamin. He or she can measure your fat soluble vitamin levels (such as vitamin D) and water soluble levels ones (B-12).

We have come across a probiotic supplement that we liked called Probiotic Immune Boost

Is Soy Bad For You?

Soy Beans

I have heard good and bad about soy. On the one hand you hear soy beans lower LDL (the bad cholesterol), reduce the risk of breast and prostrate cancer, keeps bones strong and help with symptoms of menopause. On the other hand, you also hear about the dangers of soy – how soy increases the risk of breast cancer, does nothing to help with menopause and should be avoided.

Okay so here is what Dr. Mike Roizen and Dr Mehmet Oz (also known as Dr. Oz) say “All the infighting has hidden soy’s real disease-fighting edge: Good polyunsatuated fats, high-quality protein and fiber make it a great substitute for foods known to raise your risk for heart disease. A growing stack of research suggests that soy’s nutritional power comes from the balance mix of vitamins, minerals, isflavones, proteins, fat and fiber in the original bean. So following are the recommended forms of soy products:

SOY NUTS – roasted soy nuts

EDAMAME – another name for the soy bean. At a regular grocery store you can find them in the health frozen food section or sometimes the regular frozen food section. At a health food grocery you might find them fresh. Lightly steam or boil in pods and serve warm.

Celiac Disease Recipe – Relief Through Gluten Free Diet

Gluten Free Bread Recipe

I have heard of celiac disease but I never knew what it was. Celiac disease is an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, barley and rye. Some of the symptoms are nosebleeds, stomach and leg pains. If people with celiac disease consume even the smallest amount of gluten, parts of the small intestine become damanged and malnutrition occurs. According the Jennifer Cinquepalmi, the author of The Complete Book of Gluten Free Cookbook, the only remedy is a gluten free diet, maintaining a set of cooking utensils for preparing gluten free foods and meticulous cleansing of kitchen surfaces. Cinquepalmi also notes that many store bought gluten free products contained too much starch.

She says people with celiac disease can eat what the average person eats. All sources of protein and fresh fruit and vegetables are open to people with celiac disease. Cinquepalmi advises “It’s just a matter of re-educating ourselves and cooking with grains we have never used before and adding unusual ingredients to make gluten free flours.”

Her book includes a glossary of grains, recipes for basic flour mixes and other handy hints for your kitchen. One of those hints is to invest in a heavy duty mixer. She says it is a must for making gluten free bread.

Natural Remedies For Wrinkles

Natural and Home Remedies For Wrinkles

None of us like getting older, and as we age, we are reminded how important it is to take care of our skin. I saw an great article on the Over 50 Website about home remedies for under eye wrinkles, and I intend to make that part of my regular routine. What I really liked about the recipe is that they only tell me to put things on my face that I would also put in my stomach, so I know it is safe.

For a commercial wrinkle reducer, look at products that actually encourage your skin to produce new cells, and that keep your skin hydrated. Look at Revitol Natural Anti Aging Products for a combination of vitamins and other natural ingredients that will nourish your skin and refresh your face.
