Foods to Help Lower My Cholesterol
Here is the latest food found to lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol – garbanzo beans or chickpeas.
People eating roughly 25 ounces of chickpeas per week for four weeks – that’s a little more than 3 ounces a day – saw their total cholesterol and Bad LDL decrease and Good HDL levels increase.
Insulin levels also improved, and people in the study lost a small amount of weight without dieting or exercise.
Chickpeas have more than 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein per half cup. You can eat hummus which is a chickpea dip. Hummus is good on crackers, pita, or vegetables. You can toss chickpeas in a salad, soup or pasta dish. Chickpeas are low in carbohydrates also. You can buy fried chickpeas in a market that carries Middle Eastern Food and snack on them like you would chips or pretzels.
Vitamins for Better Skin
If you want to lower your cholesterol and look younger – make a salad with chickpeas, spinach, broccoli, zucchini, corn, and green and orange bell peppers. According to Dr. Oz this mixture will help your skin maintain its elastic quality. These vegetables contain high levels of lutein, zeaxanthin and carotenoids. Women who took these supplements had improved elasticity and better hydration in their skin.

Foods High in Fiber Nutrition
We have all been told eat more fiber. Every article I have reviewed on preventing colon cancer seems to mention increasing fiber in your diet. It seems your colon works like your muscles, it needs to be working out to stay in shape. Your colon needs to have fiber to keep things moving through it. Without enough fiber food tends to remain in the colon and bacteria develops and problems begin.
Unfortunately fiber is not the most appetizing food. We tend to associate things like cardboard, tree bark and all sorts of other unpleasant tastes when we think about adding fiber. Dr. Oz though has some great suggestions on gradually increasing the fiber in your diet so your taste buds have a chance to get used to having more fiber in your diet.
Dr. Oz says “When it comes to fiber, most people get less than half of what they need. That means they are missing out on a tasty way to lower weight and blood pressure, not to mention risk of heart disease and diabetes.” Here are his suggestions:

Alternative Therapies in Health Medicine
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that as many as 62% of Americans use some form of alternative medicine. With Government funding, medical science is beginning to study the effectiveness of alternative and complementary treatments. Some of the therapies are showing positive results. Of the various categories of treatment “mind-body therapies” seems to have the greatest rate of success. Here are three types of alternative therapies that have documented valid scientific evidence behind them:
Acupuncture - Eastern philosophy says that acupuncture affects the flow of qi (pronounced chee), or energy through the energy meridians in our body. Western medical doctors explain that the needles interact with our nervous system by triggering the release of chemicals that affect our mood, perception of pain and immune response.
Medical research indicates acupuncture has been most successful with reducing pain due to knee arthritis, reducing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and in vitro fertilization.
Meditation - Meditation in its most standard form usually involves focusing on deep breathing and repeating a mantra. This process activates the relaxation response in our bodies which lowers blood pressure and improves hormone balance.

Alternative Cancer Therapies
Found this article in Parade Magazine and it gave good information about alternative cancer therapies. I summarized the major points.
More than 70% of cancer patients use complementary and alternative (CAM) medical therapies, according to a study in the journal Cancer. Alternative therapies may include acupuncture, meditation, supplements, hypnosis, homeopathy, prayer and religion.
Years ago alternative medicine was considered ineffective by the medical community and still today you will find some doctors who do not support that type of treatment. Most doctors though are willing to consider it. The American Cancer Society recently released its Complete Guide to Complementary and Alternative Cancer Therapies. The book is to be used as a reference book and details hundreds of alternative therapies including evidence of effectiveness and side effects.
Historical evidence indicates that most patients who use natural remedies are not using them as a cure but for help in handling the side effects of radiation or chemotherapy. Common side effects are nausea, stress, and harm to the immune system.
The Cancer Society guide also covers many therapies for which there is no evidence such as shark cartilage, enzyme therapy and electro-magnetic therapy. Some alternative therapies can be dangerous, according to the guide, for instance chelation therapy, oxygen therapy, and hyperthermia.

Ear Infections and Antibiotics
Do antibiotics have a lasting effect on children who take them for ear infections?
Here are the results of one of the latest studies, involving 168 children who had ear infections. The study took place over a three year period. The children ranged from 6 months to 2 years. Each child’s ear infection was treated by random assignment with amoxicillin or a placebo three times a day.
In the next three years, 84 of the children had another ear infection. The researchers calculated that those who had taken amoxicillin were 2 1/2 times as likely as the others to have a recurrence.
Ear infections are one of the most commonly diagnosed illnesses for infants and young children. By age 3, an estimated 75 percent of all children have had at least one such infection.
This study came from the July 1 issue of BMJ (British Medical Journal). For more information on otitis media (ear infections) go to National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders orKids Health and search for middle ear infection.
My children both had ear infections and were prescribed amoxicillan and both developed allergies to the drug. Natural cures may be worth considering given the results of this latest study.

Antioxidant Treats
Dr. Oz just posted an article talking about the benefits of cranberries. Though we think of them of as a holiday treat Dr. Oz says for the following reasons we should eat them all year round:
They’re high in antioxidants -
Cranberries have more of these disease-fighters than do apples, red grapes, strawberries, oranges, bananas, pears, grapefruit, pineapples and peaches. Cranberries all contain resveratrol, the heart protector in red wine, which is now being tested against breast, skin, prostate and liver cancer.
Cranberries are heart healthy –
Cranberries have antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and anticlotting agents, a combo that helps prevent fats and cholesterol from sticking to artery walls and seems to lower bad LDL cholesterol and boost good HDL cholesterol.
Cranberries help protect your teeth -
Compounds in cranberry juice appear to reduce decay-causing mouth bacteria and dissolve clusters of unhealthy germs. Just be sure to buy sugar-free juice or rinse well with water afterward. Do the same with any sweetened drink.
Cranberries help prevent ulcers and soothe upset tummies -
Scientists suspect that the berries keep ulcer-causing H. pylori bugs from hanging around the stomach and flush other harmful bacteria out of your digestive system.
